Brand new Firefox 63

I am using the new Firefox here, no problems at all so far. It feels a bit faster than Edge and really uses about the same amount of memory. The Firefox graphics seem to be sharper and slightly cleaner than Edge. I like the new tracker blocking features. I have the Avast Online Security add-on and it is reporting far few trackers now than it ever did with Edge, not that I had that many to start with.

Firefox will get swamped with complaints about forcing Auto-Play on us permanently. Somewhere between the new Firefox 63 and an eventual Firefox 64 will come an upgrade that fixes this snafu that's been shoved down our throats.

I am not changing anything in About:Config. I'll wait for the eventual fix coming between 63 and 64. I'll wear some patience in the meantime.

When programs start shoving crap down my throat I don't want, then I typically get rid of it. Firefox would be smart to limit the amount of shoving down the throat.

Exactly, Firefox is not shoving autoplay down throats but I do question why they made us disable it in a different way, but doesnt matter, its all good.

Edge is shoving autoplay down your throats with no way to stop it, Mozilla/Firefox openly gives you the solution in a world where autoplay is the defacto standard for ALL major browsers including Opera and Chrome which to stop autoplay in those you have to download an extension.
So Firefox is the easiest to disable out off ALL the major browsers, takes literally a few seconds.

Your posted link instructions worked perfect, thanks! Again Firefox makes turning off autoplay more easy then any other of the big browsers.

I initially, before your post did the line under the "default" line but changing the default to a value of one works perfect.

AS far as others not wanting to "changing anything in About:Config" ... I ask why? That is what Config is for, its simple to do and made to turn off, like a light switch :o)

I'll take a stab at this:

1) The UI is not anywhere close to being welcoming to those unclined technically.

2) The necessity of entering in values manually in some of the schema is unintuitive for many.

3) The warning about the warranty or whatever is present upon About:config's first access by a user is off-putting and threatening to some.

4) A lot of the technical nomenclature is unfamiliar to a casual or normal user.

People do not want to "configure" their software at all, usually. Users, of course, would prefer that developers read their minds and design the software according to the user's preferences to begin with; but short of that, any customizations that a user needs to make they'd prefer to make within a standard dialog page with buttons or drop-downs described in plain language.

I know that About:config was designed specifically to hide away some elements of the software's configuration - that may impact function and performance - from a casual user's view to avoid confusion and to mitigate a user messing something up. Autoplaying video, in my opinion, ought to be an option to disable that is as conspicuous and easily-accessible as any other "feature".

I have not had any auto-played videos since the FF upgrade, but I went into about:config and turned it off anyway. Many thanks to Rhymingmechanic for the link. I enjoy tinkering and learning how my computer works. It took no time at all to change the setting. So far I like the new FF a lot, will keep using it and see how things go.

I think it is just the way things will be moving forward, except for people in forums, I can only guess MS did its research and people are expecting video now, the merging of TV and Computers.

I dont know the reason and I am not disagreeing with you, in fact I agree with you, it should be simple like it used to be but that is the way the world is going I guess. I would even venture a guess most people do not even know how to go into the browser menu, I work with customers all day long, in their homes and on their cell phones, the vast majority have no idea how to configure or set anything no matter how easy, they seem to have no interest either. Many are just dumbed down to accept whatever is and I suggest this is to make it easy for internet ad revenue.

Edge, Chrome and Opera have autoplay with no option to remove it.

You can download a program to stop autoplay on Chrome and Opera but not Edge (yet that I know of)

Firefox gives you the option to stop it right in their browser without an addon, anyone who follows the link Rhymingmechanic provides certainly makes it simple.

I disagree that it is difficult for the layperson if they follow the simple steps and again, at least the option is there.

Hope this makes sense, rushing, have to go change the oil on my wifes car! *L*

Glad I could help. I saw this thread right about the time my browser updated, so I was able to connect the new autoplay behavior right away.
