Why would you say that? You must know how untrue that statement is. People come to BITOG for factual help. Not for fiction. Many new members don't have a lot of automotive savvy, and take what is said here at face value. The last thing they need is someone with extreme bias spouting off something with absolutely no basis.

That's generally my response when people say noise is caused by "light" oils.

The ticking was caused by the filter, not the oil grade.

Oh, so it was sarcasm. Sorry, I missed that.

Yes, we were both talking about Merkava.

No prob! I like being sarcastic about that stuff.

I run 0w-20 in my Focus that is spec'd for 5w-20. No awkward ticks or anything!

Under those circumstances I would have done the same thing.

Maybe recording the noise and playing it back would have helped? Still good on you! Good luck.

Hahaha - I love Merkava. Just feed that baby some 10W-40 SuperTech Hi Mileage with extra zinc & moly (boron no extra charge) and all will be well.

So far the dealer said really, you need to talk to someone that is out till tomorrow they will get back to you.

If they don't get back with you tomorrow, keep calling them back.

Keep the old filter too. They sure fed you some feces when they said the engine sounds like that.. only for the noise to become worse. What kind of warranty does it have? Keep your receipts for ALL oil changes.

Yep. In mercs world Alaskans should be running a 10w30 and the rest of the known planet needs to run a 50 grade.

That nonsense gets real old and adds absolutely nothing to a conversation.

Op

Many of today's engines tick. There's the vvt that seems to make noise with some engines. Add to that many of these small displacement engines have power output levels that rival some v-8 engines of old so because of this high stress environment engines might be noisier than they once were.
Today's engines aren't just engines. They incorporate many systems so it's possible that it's not the engines lifters or valves that are tapping or ticking,it might be a system live vvt or the egr or something else making the noise.
My point is don't sweat it til the engine is broken in.
It's a good idea to let the dealer know so if there is an actual problem you've documented it.
Enjoy your new car b

Well, Mitsubishi does have a three panel brochure called "Understanding Vehicle Sounds" that lists the various noises a Mitsubishi might make. Interestingly though, tick isn't listed.

Glad it was something simple like the filter, but that is unnerving on a new vehicle. Out of curiosity, I'd probably try another Mitsubishi filter just to see if it was a one time defect or if it's a problem with the design/specs of the Mitsubishi filter on that engine.

FWIW, late model Mitsubishis usually use one of two spin on style filters that can be swapped for one another depending on clearance. One is a skinny filter and one is fat. I wonder if switching between the two could cause a difference.
