Brake Fluid when to change

1996 plymouth voyager with A.B.S what brake fluid does everyone like? And what change intervals does everyone stick too
I dont think it has ever been changed and it has 140,000 miles on it so im going to change it soon (she just got the van) 3.3 v6 with the 4 sp overdrive runs good.
I am probably going to do a gravity bleed first then pump it a few times to get any crud out and ideas?
 
I bleed mine once a year using a full quart of valvoline dot 3/4 synthetic fluid. 140,000 miles on the same fluid is going to need at least a 2 quart flush. Start the farthest away from the master cylinder and pump each wheel until you get clean fluid. Drive it for a week then repeat.
 
If you use DOT-3 brake fluid then 3-4 year is the max interval. You should do a complete flush, not just siphon master cylinder with turkey baster.
 
I do mine every 2-3 years with a Motive power bleeder. Any DOT3 fluid should be fine. On the cheaper end, the Valvoline "synthetic" DOT 3/4 stuff seems good. I like switching between ATE blue and gold (only the color is different) so it's easy to visually see when things are fully bled out.

I use Valvoline or NAPA dot 3 for brakes. I only mess with bleeding brakes when I do a brake job.
 
When I change brake pads or every 4 years. I also do a baster replacement of the resevoir every year. I use any major brand Dot3/4. i do not save opened break fluid containes for more than 6 months even if capped.
 
Consider a vacuum bleed. Mity Vac units or knock offs are readily available.
It is so easy to simply suck out the fluid at the bleeders with only one man.
KEEP YOUR RESERVOIR FILLED! It is easy to get an 'Oops!".

Vacuum or pressure....6 of one, half dozen of the other. Both methods work better than the old two-man pump the brakes and open the bleeder method.
 
I don't know if you can do it with your brakes but with my Clutch I like to get a old fasioned oil can fill it with brake fluid fresh, and attach a hose to it fill the hose with fluid attach it to the bleeder. Then I remove the resoivoir cap turkey baster some fluid out and pump new fluid up to the master cyl. Baster more fluid out, pump, repeat until fluids clean.

But once again not sure if it will work for brakes. Works wonders for the clutch and helps when your the solo person doing it.
 
I just had my brake fluid flushed at the dealership. I don't have a "helper" so doing it myself would have been more work than i wanted to do. I was amazed at how much it helped the brake feel, especially in the bitter cold. I think i must have had some moisture built up in the system that was freezing (if thats possible) causing some rather odd "grabbing" of the brakes, which the flush seems to have eliminated.

I watched the guy do it, and he had a impressive looking rig with a tank for the new fluid, which i watched him open fresh from what looked to be a 2 quart bottle, and a very long hose that he took to each wheel (right rear first, working his way to the left front) along with a tube going to the master cyl under the hood. Took about 20 minutes. He cleaned the fitting at each wheel before and after. I was glad to see him taking pride to do the job well.

Having the right tools for the job does wonders.

They told me they rec to have it flushed every 30,000 miles. My car is an '01 with 85,000 miles and this is the first time it's been flushed, although i have used the turkey baster method a couple of times in the past.
 
One more time for the benefit of any new comers willing to measure the posts here against the real world.

In the common single piston caliper, the piston rides in a slightly over size bore, but only touches the seal, a square cross section ring that fits in a groove. When you apply the brake, the piston pushes the inner pad against the rotor, and the caliper slides in and pulls the outer one against the rotor. When you let off, the piston and caliper are pushed back just enough to clear by the wobble of the rotor. There are no springs. If the hardware is in good shape, the piston and caliper both move, but very little. If you do not lube and clean up or replace the hardware when you change pads, the caliper will not slide in as it needs to to pull the outside pad against the rotor. This is a frequent problem causing the inside pad to wear more and uneven braking.

As the pads wear, more and more of the piston stays outside the seal, untouched by the brake fluid. It is protected by a rubber boot, sealing out moisture, grit, salt, etc. Anything that makes it in past the boot can attack the the chrome plated steel piston. The plating is thinned where the it was abraded by the seal. It is slow, but rubber does abrade hard metals. Of course, the seal wears away too. The boot is next to the back side of the pad and heat from it and age harden the rubber and reduce its elasticity. It becomes less and less effective in keeping out yuck, even if it isn't cracked or torn.

Fresh fluid never touches the boot, the vulnerable part of the piston outside the seal, or the sealing surface of the seal. I doubt if flushing the caliper even disturbs the old fluid in the narrow annular space between the inner part of the piston and the bore. The inlet usually is near the bottom, but the outlet is always at the very top to bleed out the air. I am not even sure flushing the brakes carries any water or grit up and out of the caliper.

In time, the boot lets in enough to corrode the piston, both the plated steel ones and aluminum ones. Pushing the piston back with a lump of rust on it, either makes it stick, or the seal leak. Many times people will install new pads in calipers that were working fine, and then they either leak or stick. The solution is timely, preventative replacement of the old worn rubber parts and fresh lube on the piston. I prefer Sil-Glyde. A caliper kit is cheap, and rebuilding a caliper isn't that bad of a job. If you let it go too long, the piston is shot, and the cost of a piston and a kit is more than a rebuilt caliper. I have always rebuilt mine in time. After a rebuild or 2, all the original fluid is long gone before it can cause problems. On advantage of rebuilding my own calipers is that I know it goes back together with a good coat of Sil-Glyde on everything, especially the bleed screw, not brake fluid or the special brake greases that are just as hygroscopic.

Cleaning up the caliper and hardware, replacing the old, worn rubber parts, and lubing everything good prevents common problems like sticking or leaking calipers, uneven pad wear, uneven application, and broken bleed screws.

After 5 -10 years, it is good to replace the rubber brake hoses. Master cylinders are up away from the heat, salt, moisture, and grit, and seem to last much longer. If you have salt, it is good to inspect the steel brake lines paying particular attention to places where crud collects, holding moisture and salt against them. Badly pitted ones should be replaced.

In the 3 years I worked in a brake shop, leaking, sticking calipers, uneven wear, broken bleed screws, bad hoses, and brake lines rusted from the outside happened every day. We specialized in trucks. I never remember problems with brake fluid boiling. I never heard of replacing the fluid either.

And some pistons are phenolic, not metal.

But it is true that a brake bleed does not clean things up internally as clean as many would like to believe. Bleed an old system all you like, and take a wheel cylinder or caliper apart. It will have debris in it.

True, but the bleed is going to significantly dilute the garbage and remove a lot of water from the system...slowing down future corrosion and improving the boiling point of the fluid in the system. The first time you need to replace a $1500 ABS pump in a system you'll appreciate the utility of the occasional flush.

Every oil change I draw out all the fluid I can with a turkey baster and refill. Do the same with PS fluid. That has worked well for me.

You've obviously never had your brake pedal go to the floor approaching Turn 12 at Road Atlanta...
