Opened bottle of brake fluid is 1-2 years with the cap on tight, brake fluid in the system can be in use for 2-4 years. Opened bottle of ATF is 5-6 years, unopened is 10 years.
^This, water won't just magically enter a bottle that has been opened vs one that was uponed. Unused/new fluid and one that wasn't carelessly stored or handled after being opened. Sure, there is more room, but it'd take longer than just a few months or even 1 year for enough moisture to fill the extra space remaining in the bottle to rule the unused 'new' fluid as 'bad' or 'unsuitable' for use. I like the 1-2 shelf life rule for already opened, if stored properly and cap tight, etc.
