Brake cleaner is only useful for brakes and pinpointing a vacuum leak on an engine as far as I know. Kerosene applied with a paint brush on grimey motorcycle chains, then wiped clean with a used detail towel after a few minutes works well.

The good stuff, but wear a cartridge mask.

Used the crc on the right today for the first time and loved it. Ran out of Supertech brake cleaner today in the middle of changing diff fluid and ran down to Ace Hardware for some, 1/2 mile vs's 4 miles to wallyworld. It was great, only needed 1/2 can to finish the diff but holy Hannah was it expensive. $9/can vs $3. I know the convenience of in, out and home in 10minutes was worth it. Usually the reason I go there plus it was the only choice i had besides the green can CRC. It seemed to clean better than the ST and I like how it dried faster w/o leaving moisture too.

I just go to walmart and buy there brake cleaner and it works fine...

There is def a big difference between ST and CRC brake cleaner, I like non flammable red can best which is chlorinated. If $6 can of CRC dose same or better job than 2 cans of $3 per can ST, oil take CRC any day. And it works like that for me.
Simple Green industrial diluted in half for heavy duty cleaning, or with more water for general use.

Any brake cleaner that contains the tretrachloroethylene component, such as CRC Brake Cleaner, is one of the better ones.

The acetone varieties never seemed to fully degrease in my opinion.

I use carb cleaner when I don’t have brake cleaner, which is usually. Brakes are maybe every couple of years but I need to flush out a carb jet at least twice a year so I always have at least two cans of carb cleaner on the shelf.

Might as well ask, what's the difference between 'parts and brake cleaner', 'parts cleaner' and 'carb cleaner' ? And I don't mean where you use them... 🤣 It seems like they are somewhat interchangeable maybe.

I just use carb cleaner usually. The brake cleaner whether the chloro or other cancer causer still leaves a film behind. I'm using files and wire brushes on the bracket anyway.

I use "parts cleaner" for brakes while keeping clear of the caliper rubber seals.
they are more readily available & better value
