Box Store Riding Mowers in 2024

I like your hitch setup. Is that something made by JD or did you make it yourself.
The 2" hitch receiver was made for a Polaris ATV. I drilled holes in the rear plate of the L100 and in a 3/16" steel plate used as a backing. The L100 plate is sandwiched between the hitch receiver and the backing plate. Super strong and used to pull trailers with or without a ball hitch. I liked it so well that I put one on my X590 too.

Thanks for the info. I also have an X590. You satisfied with the way it mows?

.6 acre property or .6 acre grass? Either way, I would not buy a rider for that much (or little). A 25" self propelled quality mower is my choice. A rider opens up a whole new dimension and expense. Sorry no recommendations since I sold my Honda to a lawn care servicer 2 years ago (for more than paid for it 30 years ago) and bought Greenworks 80V from Costco with 8 year battery warranty. 2 4ah batteries will easily do .6 acre.

A box store riding mower and quality/reliability is a contradiction in terminology.

Edit: With cursory examination, I see Toro has a 30" self propelled model. B&S 223cc.
I'm curious how many batteries will they replace under warranty? How "bad" do they have to be before they'll warranty them? My neighbor bought one of the green go mowers from Ace or Home depot. The first one burned to the ground. After three summers the mower battery doesn't last long enough to mow his front and back yard.

I've tinkered with many mowers over the years. I maintain mowers for a lot of family and friends.
When it comes to box store mowers, I like the John Deere's the best.
They are designed pretty well, and for just residential grass mowing will last quite a while. They are pretty easy to maintain and work on.
Parts are easy to get and dealer service for Deere is usually pretty good.

Just so you know, the box store mowers can be bought at the Deere dealers for the same price.
If you have a dealer close by, I'd recommend you stop in and see what they have to offer. My local dealers service is way better than what you get at a box store.

Get an electric riding mower. This Cratfsman should satisfy your needs :)

Just over half an acre is no problem for electric. They are also much quieter :D

They even make robotic mowers like this one
Have they fixed the issues with the batteries not lasting? A few YouTube channels had initial good impressions but after two to three seasons they said that they weren't impressed.

unless your lawn is really bumpy with ditches + steep hills a CC30H aka hydrostatic like i bought is GREAT IMO love the mowing in reverse feature!!

I am glad you love it. Cub Cadet (MTD stuff) is a better value than most will like to say. Most are still made or assembled in USA or Canada. Most riding mowers today give you the option to mow in reverse. It is a desirable feature. The smoothness and variable speed of a hydro is a nice feature too. Hopefully the hydro transmission makes it easy to change the fluid. Most lesser priced riding lawn tractors do not. You have to remove the transaxle from the machine to change the fluid and filter. They say it is a life time fill, but you know what that means? Any USA made lawn equipment should last a long time if maintained and stored in a garage or shed. When people say xyz mowers only last 5 years or 10 years it is based on someones experience who did not maintain the equipment or does not want to pay $150 to do a repair after 7 years of use. It is an opinion as is mine. OPDE should be judged by hours of run time not calendar time. Abuse should be factor it. Like leaving it outside unprotected or not changing the oil per the manual, etc. I have mowers that are 30 years old that I still use. All picked up used so I do not know their histories but the owners did not want to repair them so I got them for cheap or even free. I take reasonable good care of them and they all work as they should. A little bit of PM goes a long way on lawn equipment. They are not complicated or that expensive to repair like a car. Good luck with your mowing.!!!!!!!

several brands are only different in color BUT thr hydro + $500 was worth it. non hydros you manually shift into but the hydro once set is on another pedal + needs resetting if you stop -get off or restart, also have an OLD honda HRX self propelled hydro 20 plus yrs with MANY mows!!

Have the J.D. D130 with the 22 H.P. twin cylinder and 42" deck . Purchased it about 11 years ago from LOWES and now has 510+ hours . Mow up to 2 acres and has 35 degree grades . Use 5w-30 P.P. synthetic most of the time . Has the original battery .

Now well over 600 Hours .
