A few weeks back I got the idea that I wanted a Swiss auto winding mechanical watch and ended up with this Longines Conquest Chronograph. The wife wasn't too happy but I bought it with some side hustle money so we are still married. The question is should I run VR&P or HPL in it?

You didn't upset family budget and used extra cash to make yourself happy, win win to me.
I did similar thing recently with extra investment earnings, bought a watch, stereo receiver and headphones, wife doesn't know about last two

They make excellent watches.

I've been looking at a new Longines or Bulova. Maybe a Hamilton khaki. Wish I'd have kept the military field watch the USMC issued on my way to the 'sandbox' war in the Gulf. Think it might have been a Bulova or Marathon on a green strap. Had to return it to supply or pay for it if claimed was lost.

Nice watch! Does the self winding mechanism have service requirements? Do you have or plan to get a winding machine to keep time while not wearing it?

Once the watch fully self winds it has approx 60 hours of power reserve so you can put it away for the weekend and just put it back on Monday morning. You can send it in every 5 or 8ish years and have a light service done to it (clean lube) many people go much longer than that.

I could get a winder but we will hold off on that for now.

I have an ESQ Swiss that I got for Christmas many years ago and cherish it. I have to take it to Helzberg to have it sent out for new batteries and cleaning. Whomever services it does it in a nitrogen sealed box. On a whim a few years ago I asked if a high capacity battery was available. Sure enough it was for only $20 more. I now pull out the stem when not wearing it to extend the battery life.

This will round out my other watches that I own. A Hamilton my Dad bought new in 1953, 2 Accutrons from my Father and Grandfather A G Shock and a Citizen Eco Drive. I just had the Hamilton serviced that is running great. I need to get the Accutrons done soon. I'll leave on the "twisto flex" band on the Accutron just for memories.

It's easier to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission
Depending on the watch cost it can't be any worse than a coworker of mine whos husband brought home a Mercedes Benz and asked her how she liked it. "It's nice". Her husband said great " I bought it. "

I may do the same kind of thing and buy a quart of Amsoil 5W-30 for my self propelled push mower!
