Bought a Gas Can You Like Lately?

I bought an Eagle 5 gallon gas can. It's the type 1 with the single opening and spring loaded handle. $40 on Amazon. No tax and free 2 day shipping (with Amazon Prime trial membership). The funnel fits on in a weird fashion but other than that its a solidly built unit and will probably be the last one I will ever need.

I have this one in a 1 gal size, I cut a notch in the cap to aid in removal so the tab doesn't lock it into place.

I honestly like this can, it takes a few seconds to flow but starts a swirling effect and pours fairly well.

I have dozens of the old style blitz self venting cans, before EPA got into the gas can business and ruined it for all.

I also bought three cases of 1-gallon cans off ebay that came with old style nozzles that I can put on new 5-gallon cans to make them work so much better.

I use 5x 5 gallon cans to fill my boat from the gas station. Only need to make the trip a few times a year, but it beats $6 per gallon marina gas.

I don't even try to pour gas from the new style cans. Once they have gas in them I use a shaker hose to siphon gas out of it into whatever I'm putting gas in.

No mess and I'm not holding 40 lbs of gas for 30 minutes.

I actually found one of those ECO friendly cans(I would never contribute to those Green hippies)It has the lever you pull back and then hold the trigger to pour. I really like it. You can fill up small engines and and as soon as its full release the trigger and the gas stops like right now. I really like that can.

I purchase the Blitz brand 6+ water tanks. They have the 1st generation EPA spout, which is just fine IF you poke a 3/16 inch hole in the top, other side. Just put a 3/16 bolt in the hole when done.

They are white in color and say "water" on the side. But, they are the best large jugs around. And they are priced right.

The very same jug in the "gasoline" flavor has the latest horrible EPA compliant spout.

I have a couple old blitz 2 1/2 gallon cans. You know, the ones with the vents, and the extending, flexible hose. Those are my favorites. Easy to use, not like these new [censored] non-flexible fill pipe, non vented ones.

I have this one, needed a gas can and no other choice. Once I manage to get the thing unlocked it works pretty good actually. It is pretty flimsy though. I don't expect it to last the year.

I've hit quite a few farm auctions, and have a ton of these cans. From 1,2, & 5 gallon. About half of them are missing the little yeller cap. Anyways, I've got em sometimes for a few bucks for 3 or 4 of them. They aren't pretty but, they work good!

You take the valve stem out, that leaves you with about a 3/8" vent hole. You drill the appropriate size hole & screw in your valve. You could use a little upper end glue also if desired. The hole in the valve is just capped with a standard cap that goes on a tire air valve, very easy to replace if needed.

Another good source for older gas cans is garage/estate sales & auctions. I think it is easier to just modify a newer can though. Of course if you drill a metal can take precautions if any gas fumes are present.

I have used this method for several years now. Just use a rubber valve stem, take the core out and use a wire to fish the valve stem to the hole. You dont need any glue as the rubber seals up great. No more problem junk gas cans for me.

I had one of those trigger kinds it lasted one fillup..
I then returned it broken to wal-mart.

they looked at me funny with the big black plastic bag.. and i think the guy at customer service was huffing the gas smell..

I recently purchased one of the No Spill cans from Amazon.com. So far it works very well. Fuel flow rate is a little slower than I would like, but that's probably due to the limited venting. However, it is easy to control the flow once you get the hang of it. This can sure was expensive though, at least double the price of a similar capacity gas can from Lowe's or Home Depot.

After reading some of the posts above, it appears that EPA regulations are behind the generally poor performance and high spill rate of the newer can designs. In their attempt to control the venting of fuel into the air, the regulations actually increase the amount of fuel evaporated into the air because of increased spillage! Typical government...
