Bought a Gas Can You Like Lately?

I had to add a gas can the other week,looking at about 5-6 gallons. I have my old favorite from the late 1980's but of course they can't be sold new anymore,EPA regs. I have had plenty of opportunities the last number of years using different gas cans to fill various machines. I have never seen so much spilled gas as with the newer 'EPA cans'. I refuse to add to the mess.

So far I got 2 of the 5 gallon 'VP Racing Cans', they have a pour spout & an air hole in back. They get good reviews from those 'in the know' about cans.

My last impulse buy is an Eagle 'Safety Can', it has one fairly normal pour spout. My plan is to add a vent to opposite side to let it flow freely. I have a brass air fitting with the stem removed. It's only about a 1/4" air hole, but better than nothing.

It was interesting reading reviews of the new cans,mostly very negative. I also saw a few funny U-Tube videos showing guys venting current cans. I'll give up a few fumes to keep spilled gas to a minimum. I also detest the cans that hold the spout down in the gas. Maybe I'm to fussy?

Agree 100%, near impossible to pour with the new spring-loaded thing in the EPA cans.

In Canada you can buy replacement plastic spouts that are just open, and have a spin-on cap.

The yellow Blitz spring loaded cap/nozzle bites.

I almost always overpoured with that [gosh darn] thing.

The green Enviroflo is easier to use, but it breaks within a year. Grab the receipt and go get another one. I'm on my 3rd one now. I don't think they are going to give me another one.

The Blitz cans themselves are fine. No problems. But I hate the cap/nozzles.

Agree 100%. Touching the tube when it's been in the can transfers all kinds of gas to my skin, so I wear nitrile gloves for my health. And most of those "accordian" style tubes spring up at me when I pull the can back out, sling-shooting a glob of gas who knows where.

My newest can has one of those goofy "pull back the outer skin" self- venting spouts which I actually sort of manage, by virtue of being able to slow the gas to a trickle with my second hand as the tank I'm filling nears the top. I wear nitrile gloves with it too.

I do wonder if by not evaporating large sums of fuel through my new containers, and the most evaporative fractions at that, if it makes my OPE start any easier. Hard to say considering everything else they've done to gas lately (cough ETOH cough).

If you can find one of these online somewhere it is the absolute best 2.5 gallon gas can I've ever owned. I have five of them.

I bought a new 2-1/2 gallon gas can a few months ago and spilled gas like never before. I hate the thing.
Good things I still have 3 older cans, but they are 1 gallon each.

I'm glad I'm not the only one!!!

Never have spilled more fuel before.

Not to mention the new spouts will not fit into the gas fill on cars

we still have some older plastic cans we fill. We are down to 1 spout for 10 cans. it is the ones you can turn the spout upside down and point it into the can. Thats how we store them using the broken spoutn and then rotate the one good spout. wish we would have stocked up on spouts when you could walk into Walmart and buy spares.

I think I will cry when that one breaks.

My new plan is if I ever find a new can/spout combo I like I'm going to stock up on spares before they are regulated out of existence!

Also, if you were to drill a small vent hole in opposite side of the spout on the newer versions, do you think that would make them easier to pour? You would just need to find something to plug the vent hole when not in use.

Yup, can't stand the new EPA regulated gas and kerosene cans. No vent holes, they take forever to empty/pour from, and as others have said you spill 10X's as much with them as you did the old style.

Yes, you can add a 'vent hole', even to the plastic can. There is at least one 'U-Tube' video showing a guy doing it. The item I see used is a brass threaded 'air valve' for a portable air tank. You take the valve stem out, that leaves you with about a 3/8" vent hole. You drill the appropriate size hole & screw in your valve. You could use a little upper end glue also if desired. The hole in the valve is just capped with a standard cap that goes on a tire air valve,very easy to replace if needed.

Another good source for older gas cans is garage/estate sales & auctions. I think it is easier to just modify a newer can though. Of course if you drill a metal can take precautions if any gas fumes are present.

What if you remove the spout on the gas can when you need to pour and use a funnel?

If you just remove the spout a main issue you have is no air vent on the other end of the top. If you poured very slow it would work, or it will do a lot of 'gurgling'. One of my ideas was to put on a more conventional spout(short hose) affixed with a hose clamp after I cut the spout. After that add the air vent to the opposite side of the top.

I use all kinds of containers for gas. What keeps me from spilling any of them is by using a long tapered funnel and good technique. The funnel is probably designed for transmission fluid.
