Bought a Cheap Accord

I would actually upgrade the radio to something with bluetooth at least if it doesn't have it. I transferred a plain Kenwood from an older CRV to my daughters current '08. She doesn't care about the lack of carplay. Her music streams with no issue and we put the microphone on the A-pillar so she can make hands free calls. She also has a small USB power outlet on left side of steering wheel with 1 foot power cord. an i-Ottie windshield mount low left makes Waze easy to see without taking eyes off the road.

Where are the pictures of under valve cover when you checked/adjusted the valves? Seriously? This is BITOG, it's what we live for. I think you should be punished and banned from posting for like 3-4 hours.

This is my Accord. Kids CRV and Forte, wife's Pilot are the basically same.

OBDII Accords from 1996 and all 1997 Accords have non-adjustable distributors. The manual which we both have is based on prior year vehicles and is not correct for the OBDII engines. The distributor cannot be adjusted on these engines as the mounting slots in the distributor flange were changed.
I stand corrected (was going to edit my previous comment but can't..) Found this on Honda Tech's forum.. The 96 and up the distributor is only installed and looks like (again I was wrong) it is not adjustable even base timing.

Hopefully you get it running real soon.

You're going to be hitting Black Friday season with the tires. Great time to buy. I wrote an article at Capital One about how to get the best deal. It comes down to three things.

Price match first (Discount Tire is big on that)
Look up Rebates (manufuacturer and retailer)
Have them price match Walmart on the installation.

Also Discount Tire will price match your wiper blades with the Rockauto price if you include delivery.

Good luck!

I'm not surprised I knew that engine (from your video) sounded like it was running correctly. But still nice that you checked the valve adjustment anyway. OH wow.. that car was NGK from the factory, glad to hear you put the right plugs back in.

It would be interesting to see if you get a proper oil change with a good filter if the oil pressure light doesn't flicker. It could also be some stuff in the oil pick tube of the oil pump.. But changing the oil a couple times should fix that. Otherwise you're dropping the oil pan to check out the oil pick up.

Sounds like you're on your way, getting it back into shape.. also check the color of the brake fluid if it's dark it needs to go. Honda asks for every 3 years, replace the brake fluid.

Sorry I missed on the valve cover pics! I was in a hurry and didn't have my phone. Heres some pictures of the plugs I pulled out l though, not much to see. Autolite 5224s. Honestly don't look like they've seen a lot of use.

This is the radio that is in it. It works fine, I guess. I'm not an audiophile at all, I typically just prefer the stock appearance of a factory head unit.

Went out to the junkyard today and got a few parts. Got an OEM radiator cap to replace the no-name China one that was on it.

Also got a regular gas cap to replace the silly locking cap. I'm pretty sure the junkyard one I got is a Stant-made OEM cap.

The car didn't have a spare tire, so I got a spare with the hold-down. The car also didn't have the fiberboard trunk floor. I got one, but it is very warped, so sprayed some water on it and weighed it down, hopefully it straightens out.

yup the ol' warped trunk floor cover.. I eventually had some thin mdf cut to cover the spare tire well on the civic, worked great, that's if yours doesn't straighten out.. funny how the same era accord had the same era civic issues.

Those plugs just look like they've been in there for awhile but not a lot of use.. looks like the story of hte owner being "Away" for awhile makes sense.

The floor cover seems to be straightening out some. I wet it again and moved the weights around. Hopefully it turns out okay. Wonder if I could find a factory trunk mat?

The plugs really didn't look bad and based on what I've seen from the car, the story definitely adds up.

I picked up two oil filters this evening. Went with the cheap Carquest standard multi-pack filters. I'll get an oil change done with some proper 5w30 and do another change shortly after. Can't wait to cut open the filter that is on it.

hey those might be premium guard filters under carquest's name. I think the way to tell if it says "leak tested" at the top, we've seen lots of nice filters from premium guard. and ya it'll be cool to see what the other filter looks like when you cut it open!

hope that trunk board straightens out for ya! I'd say a junk yard to find a new one, ebay is crazy sometimes with what they're asking for old parts..

but ya know the biggest question I have.. what's the engineering book behind the oil filters?(y)

Yeah they are premium guards. Chinese made, but still decent filters.

Surprisingly the local junkyards don't have much in the way of these cars. The one I went to yesterday is a bigger yard and only had two 94-97s. Lot of 98-02s and 03-07s.

As for the book, I'm a mechanical engineering student. My dad is a civil engineer, he came across it in his office and thought maybe I'd like to have it.

yup that book reminded me of my days in the college of engineering, hope you do well in your studies.(y)

you're probably lucky that you even found two of the 94-97 years in the junkyard. and hey if it gets too bad you could always use the trunk mat you have as a template to cut out plywood or similar.

One thing did hit me about your engine was the timing belt, wondering if it was done in the last 10 years. not trying to make ya worry just hit me as a maintenance item.

Well I thank you. I'm definitely getting a bit burned out on the BS filler classes, but I really enjoy the math and sciences.

The trunk mat seems to have come out okay. It's not perfect, but good enough for who it's for.

I changed the oil and filter today. Used cheap conventional 5w30 Supertech and the previously shown Carquest filter. I also added 4 ounces of Seafoam to the crankcase per the instructions on the can. Don't know that it'll actually help anything, but I doubt it'll hurt. The rattle noise is no different, but I'm not seeing any oil light on the dash and I did let it get up to temp. This will be a short interval, I have some 5w30 Maxlife for it on the shelf.

Here's the filter I pulled off. I'm guessing that date code is 2018? I tried to cut it open, and failed miserably. Not a photo-worthy cut and post. There was some carbon chunks inside. I saw some sparkles but I'm 90% sure that was a result of my failed cut-open job.

As for the timing belt, it did cross my mind. I peeked at it while I had the valve cover off and it didn't look too bad. Not dry-rotted or anything. I might do it eventually, but I'm not in a big rush for that job. Still trying to keep my investment low until this car proves itself a little bit.

I miss college and sometimes think about going back. Toured a college last weekend with the daughter and kinda wish it was me going.

Filler classes have their uses. One semester I elected to take pyc101 or whatever. It was between two core classes so I would skip class and do homework instead--I learned how the teacher did tests. He would cover the material for the test day before, so I would go to that class, read the book the night before, and get an easy B.

But the ecology one... I think the teacher didn't like me (probably because I would sit in the back, eating my lunch and otherwise goofing off). Don't remember if it was a C. Didn't care then, still don't now.

The one I wish I had studied more was statistics. I found that I could do the homework during the class. [Did one of the tests in like 15 minutes, shocking the teacher--pretty sure it was in the high 90's for a grade.] Don't remember any of it as I didn't use it for years and it wasn't at the time all that important to me. But some days I wish I understood six sigma, Cpk and the like a whole lot better--it shows up a lot in the manufacturing world.

Now I enjoyed thermodynamics... don't remember it but I recall enjoying it.

ya I was reluctant to throw something else on the to-do list, but you're right, see if this is even worthy of the investment of a timing belt change. I agree..

about the BS filler classes.. I remember the "wanting to get on with it" sort of thing and feeling like the classes were just time wasters. But I remember what an engineering math professor said to our class.. He said "you cannot keep your brain bathed in engineering or mathematics 100% of the time, you have to schedule down time where you don't even think of it at all" We asked "what's the problem with being immersed in math and engineering?" He said "oh you think that your brain was designed to be "on" all the time? We pressed him some more, he said "ok.. how about losing your mind and ending up in a mental institution?" Whoa.. He then told us the story of how when he was an underclassman there was a guy who was always "on" thought he could hurry up and get through all of engineering.. Turns out he had a mental breakdown, running naked through the dorm hallways, screaming.. Yup he never returned to college..

I'm not saying that you'll go that way, just saying that I did learn to not pressure yourself to get through the BS classes just to get to the "good stuff" Enjoy the ride.. Like Aerosmith said "Life's a journey, not a destination".. I did what that professor said and I found something amazing, I actually learned and absorbed more of the material by just turning-off and coming back to the material.

Ok that was a long story but wanted to be able to explain, that professor was one of the awesome ones that I had.. and to this day he made an impact on how I think and view things. Yup this is way off topic from used car but hey it triggered a memory.. pass along good advice I had when I was in your place in time.

back to the car.. who knows if seafoam will do anything, probably won't hurt. The rattle you're talking.. I listened to the video it sounded normal. but..Do you have a mechanic's stethoscope? They're at harbor freight if you don't have one they're like $8. Take a listen to the fuel injectors while it's running. Then push the throttle plate open, raise the rpms.. See if that rattle is really the injectors.
Then move around to the power steering pump, a/c compressor, alternator (on the civic it was underneath the side of the engine). Might start to help isolating where you're hearing this rattle.

If the injectors are making noise, you could try to clean them with a can of BG Products 44k fuel cleaner, but with my injectors I tried that, they were just tired and worn out at 200k miles lol

ya that glitter was probably from trying to cut the oil filter casing. have you thought of sending it off for a used oil analysis? Not blackstone they are getting really bad lately, AMS Oil has polaris do their tests much much better.. hey just some suggestions..

I didn't go to college right out of high school. I always did well academically but I did not like school and by the time I graduated high school I wanted nothing to do with college. So I worked as a Ford tech for a while and really wasn't happy doing it. Then worked some warehouse-type jobs before getting my CDL and drove tractor trailers for a short while. I loved the driving but hated the job. I was the most miserable I'd ever been. I quit the OTR driving, pretty upset with myself and unsure what my next step would be.

I took a couple months and really thought deeply about it and decided I needed bite the bullet and go to college. So I signed up for community college and loved it. Now I've been going part time while working for about 2 years and I'm about 40% through. I honestly regret not going to college earlier but if I had, I don't think I'd appreciate it the way I do now, and the work experience I have isn't all for naught.

I've got psych 101 right now. Definitely a snooze fest. Unfortunately just one I have to get through. English 1 and 2 are also pretty lame. I wrote more complex papers in 7th grade than what we do in those classes.

The rattle might be hard to hear in the video, but it's noticeable at about the 13-14 second mark. I do have a mechanic's stethoscope and it seemed like the noise was more from the top of the engine but I didn't spend a lot of time looking around with it. It could possibly be an exhaust manifold gasket, I really have to look closer.

A UOA might be a good idea. I wasn't aware that Blackstone was having issues.

Went around today with my mechanic's stethoscope and tried to isolate this noise. It's definitely not the injectors, and not any of the belt driven accessories. It's 100% coming from the long block itself, but very hard to isolate. The noise is most noticeable when the car is cold. Once it gets fully up to operating temperature, it virtually disappears unless the engine is under load at around 2000-2500 RPM.

It seems loudest near the top of the engine on the passenger side, but just barely.

Maybe a wild guess, but could this be detonation from the old gas in the tank?

Typical Honda clatter, I wouldn't worry too much about it, but you could check your valve clearances. Our K24 behaves like yours and I'm not too concerned. Please keep us updated, I'm enjoying your progress.

It is exactly what those engines have happen to them as they get older. It will get louder and eventually oil consumption will increase until you have to get the engine rebuilt. It sounds like it’s coming from the top end but it’s not. It’s in the block and it’s caused by excessive piston movement in the bore.

Thanks. This is the first Honda that is mine although not the first Honda in the driveway. Still the oldest Honda in the driveway and the only one I've got to do much wrenching on, so I'm still learning all of the Honda peculiarities.

Would a thicker oil be a good idea to help quiet it down and maybe prolong it's life a bit? Maybe a 5w40 or 10w40?
