Just saw a thread about Hyundai OEM filters being more stout to avoid noises on start up.

Reminded me that someone claimed Bosch Premiums had thicker cans than PureOnes.

Is that true? For what it is worth, Motorcraft seems as stout as Bosch Premium for my application.

I think the "stoutness" overtone in the other thread was more than just can thickness. But from what I've seen I think the Bosch filters do seem to have a little "stouter" can.

A more stout filter can has nothing to do with startup noise. This is usually your ADBV differences.

Yes they were speaking of internal construction mostly the way I took it, although the can on a filter expected to experience higher pressures would naturally also be thicker.

I experimented with some Liberty diesel filters, the cans on those could have been used to bludgeon someone to death they were so thick. Diesels often have much higher oil pressures.

Its not the glue so much as it is the cardboard :P

Don't get too worked up on can thickness. Your engine will never generate the pressure required to warp/reach the strengths of your oil can, unless you fill up your engine with shampoo and try to compete in the Daytona 500.

Rather, focus on more important merits such as filter efficiency, ADBV, etc.

Exactly.

I gotta ask why you run a Fram if you are a member of this forum? Tempting fate or what?

I've always preferred the feel of a solid shell. I'll usually give the filter a firm press and feel if the metal flexes. In all my years of driving, I've never had an issue with the thickness of a can (such as a rock hitting it)but hey, if you can have a thicker can why not?

I will say that the PureOnes I've purchased lately aren't too thick. Some of the more stout filters I've used are the Fram Ultra and the Bosch Distance Plus.

And there you have it, a concise accurate answer with no extraneous information. Kudos.

In many decades of diy oil and filter change, not one issue with can thickness of any filter. Unless one has particularly low exposed filter orientation and/or does regular off roading, imo can thickness differences are insignificant in pc use.
