I saw Motorking mentioned in a thread not to long ago that Bosch are Purolator are now separated? Is this common knowledge or did this just happen and does anyone have any details of this?

Purolator was a 50/50 venture between Bosch and Mann-Hummel. it was sometime in the last year that Bosch Pulled out, leaving them just in the hands of Mann-Hummel.

From the "Joint Ventures" section of the wikipedia page for Robert Bosch GmbH:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Bosch_GmbH
"Purolator Filters
Bosch owned 50% of Purolator Filters in a joint venture with Mann+Hummel until 2013. In 2013 the Mann+Hummel Group has takenover the remaining 50% stakes from Bosch."

Thanks for the information. So one has to wonder if what company will be making Bosch filters now since it will most likely be a contracted part.

Hopefully Bosch's departure is not reason for the streak of filter tears weve seen in purolators lately.

Most of the big tier 1 vendors like Bosch are going towards shedding parts of their business that are not core elements.

Bosch will not be making filters or contracting out with their branding.

I personally think this is a good thing for Purolator, and
Mann. It leaves them a smaller more focused company which hopefully makes a better filter. My guess is the slight lapse in quality was due to the massive company formed by all these and probably some confusing too.

For around 10 years in the shop i have been using purolator or group 7 which is purolator and had no problems but now i am cutting them open because i heard they are having quality issues. I cut a 111 and 14670 open today and they seemed good. I will do a bunch of them if i find any that are bad i will post it if i dont find anything wrong i will post that also.

Thanks cod. Much appreciated as all those pics of torn media got me worried as well. I still have a few Classics and P1s to use and hopefully since I got them all in 2012 they are from a better quality batch.

I saw a new style box for a Bosch filter in AZ the other day along with the older black ones.

The ownership change might explain why the efficiency has gone down from 99.9% to 99%.

As a Bosch Premium filter user (the black filter), I hope this doesn't impact these filters. I really like them and hope they don't stop making them or they get cheapened out.

Imo, it's unfortunate that an innuendo was posted suggesting that Purolator no longer made Bosch US made filters. There was and still is no citing to the extraneous comment implying that Bosch's sale of it's half share of Purolator to M&H, who already owned the other half, means Purolator no longer make Bosch filters, and further that Bosch may now no longer be made in the US.

As I said on that thread, the current Bosch Distance Plus and Bosch Premium still say made in US, and are made by Purolator. Lacking authoritative information to the contrary, citing preferable, I take anything else at this point as unconfirmed hearsay.

Also said, much as K&N and MicroGard left Rank/Fram/Champ and Bosch left Champ in the past, Bosch would be more free to look for another manufacturer. But, at this point I've seen nothing indicating that having occurred or about to happen any time in the near future.

All things considered though, not very surprising that the very broad 'departed' term would spawn such unproven speculation.

As for the comment above about the Bosch Premium's new box saying 99%, afaik BP has always said 99% not 99.9%, even as Bosch switched from Champ to Purolator as manufacturer.

Looking closer at the older Bosch Premium box it did say 99.9%, so I stand corrected on that point. Don't think that necessarily indicates a change in manufacturer. A trip to AZ for an inspection of the filter inside the new BP box will give solid indication if the manufacturer and coo has changed as has been implied. Perhaps even a box and tapping plate pic will be possible.

Bosch website used to say 99.9% and exclusive filtech media.

Now it says 99% and nothing about exclusive filtech media.

Boxes have changed also so clearly something has changed.

Just back from AZ with BP pics (post later). Quite confident (99% like the BP) that while the box and filtration efficiency are new/different, the manufacturer remains the same including the Made in USA on the can. Even the manufacture code is similar. Checked several different applications of the new box for baseplate configuration/design. Same as Purolator and previous Bosch design.

As said, unfortunate imo that innuendo of Bosch no longer being made in US and thus not by Purolator was posted. I'll stand by that.

As for the name Filtec media that name carried over from when Champ made Bosch. And Gary Allan (rip) posted that was just the name Bosch gave their media, not an indication of who made it.

But more important is where and who still make the US made Bosch spin on oil filters.
