bmw oil question.

My brother-in-law bought 2005 BMW 530 with 60k miles about 6 months ago, the previous owner changed oil every 6k miles or 6 months by himself and had free dealer oil change at 1 year marks.
If you buy a good body condition but the OCI's was 15k miles then you should do a couple short OCI's to flush out the potential sludge in the engine.

my friend has a 1985 535i and he does 8k OCI's on Mobil 1
the car runs great at about 220,000 miles
if your concerned about the condition of the car just do a couple short OCI's using dino to get rid of the possible sludge then switch over to a quality synthetic & filter and run however long your comfortable with. i'd say 8-10k

15k miles on the right oil and with certain driving conditions is not a problem, but lots of short trips, stop and go, with little open road use could spell trouble in the sludge department. Hard to know without pulling the valve cover and taking a look.

Car has 19k miles on it in about 20 months. 1 oil change at 18 k. Wish it was done on the yearly schedule, but only have record of 1 change. Would there be much sludge under worst case conditions of extreme service and 1 change. What would you use to do quick oil changes, Mobil 1 0=w40 or something cheaper. I am still in warranty so that limits my options...

As long as it doesn't look like this:
At 20k, you should be good, but I don't like those extended oem services. It got plenty of mfgs in trouble.
My prefered method of service for these engines is a dealer synthetic change for the winter, and then another change 6 months later. $2 15w40 works perfectly as long as climate allows it and you are not too worried about 1% mpg loss.

I think if i was buying a new car that i knew had a sketchy oil history, i'd run any cheap dino for about 1k then drain it out and repeat about 3 times. (don't forget filter!)

Don't worry, just drive it. It probably had some extra wear due to the lon OCI yet it will still run smooth and offer nice power too. The BMW oil is stout and the OLM on the BMWs are very advanced. I would rather have had the oil changed at 7.5k yet I would still buy the car knowing that most of the miles were highway.
I would use Chevron Delo 15W40 with 1/2 quarts MMO for 2-3 short OCI's of about 1-2k miles, then change to Mobil 1 0W40 for 7-8k miles OCI's.
With only 19k miles on this engine, I would not worry too much. You could do a couple of shorter oil changes to sort of flush it out, but oil itself will only do so much. By short, I mean about 2000 miles with dino or about 5000 with a synthetic. Just not sure it is really necessary. A 7500 mile oci with a BMW approved LL-01 oil would be a good starting point, perhaps after one somewhat shorter oci of 5000 miles.
