BMW: lawsuit over oil filter housing

Doesn't sound like it was a good move to plastic. The plastic oil filter housing probably leaks if overheated or over time.

BMW is subject to a class action lawsuit brought by owners of bimmers with B46, B48 and B58 engines. It seems that BMW switched from an aluminum housing to a plastic housing in 2014. The plastic oil filter housing fails and allows oil and coolant to mix.

Strange as I don't think BMW ever used a metal oil filter housing on the B-series engines. Looking at realoem there isn't a p/n for a metal housing.

The labor for this job is ridiculous. Too bad the S58(M3/M4) gets a metal housing and it's not compatible with the B-series

Chain in the back, i Knew it this will be an issue when they introduced the engine.

There are aftermarket metal housings.

My 535d N57 diesel engine suffered a sudden plastic oil filter housing failure last year, but luckily it just puked coolant and there was not any oil/coolant mixing. That was not a nice repair bill.

Yep. Chain in the back.
And BMW moved the chain to the back to smooth out operation in the already smoothest inline six in the world.
But that is a BMW thing.

Them German engineers! Gott im Himmel!!!

Ooops...you are correct. Was thinking of the cap that the filter is inserted into. Thanks for correcting me. Still certain the oil pan and drain plug are plastic.
