BMW EGR Cooler Warranty Extension

Got the following letter from BMW that the EGR cooler on my 2016 535d N57 diesel engine is included in a warranty extension....FOR 25 YEARS, unlimited mileage. Never seen anything like that before. (Personal data removed from image). As a side note, this repair was done on my car just before I bought it in 2023.

That is great for these owners! Must have been the lesser of evils to offer warranty instead of having a recall if they seen the writing on the wall. Are they a known issue? I know in the 6.0L Power Stroke world it is but that's what got me a great deal..ha! Thanks for sharing these important details.

From my internet sleuthing, I can't tell how much of an actual issue it is. Apparently some BMW police cars across the pond had some serious issues with it, but according to BMW, that was related to the manner in which the police cars were sometimes driven. My understanding is the police force that had the issues stopped using BMW as police cars.
