BMW changes course on batteries- moving to 4680 format

The cost of doing business in some countries. Nothing more, nothing less.

It's a complete reversal and toss out of prior investment in a platform that will never see an ROI at this stage.

Not sure what doing business in some countries has to do with it?

Not sure it is nothing. The battery is the biggest single cost of an EV. Apparantly BMW made a costly decision.

Doing business in China requires foreign automakers to make some sacrifices, especially when it comes to "suggestions" towards using domestic suppliers. Remember the Chinese Govt wants to become the premier battery manufacture of the world.. Some of the quotes from German auto execs about this have been enlightening. This is why I was surprised that Tesla received what appeared to be such a sweet deal with regards to the terms for the Shanghai factory.

I would not be surprised if this battery form factor is not used outside China.

The form factor is already supported world wide. Tesla got the sweet deal because they committed to the volume to make it work.

BMW is doing business with China because no one is backing their own format and China has bought into Teslas.

BMW was faced with changing or not having enough batteries.

That's fine. I'm talking about why EVE was chosen. This got me to dig some more and turns out EVE is building a plant in Debrecen Hungary (The PM of Hungary has been very receptive to investment from China) in addition to another Chinese company CATL. CATL also broke ground on a plant in Germany (Thuringia) some years ago.

Perhaps EVE manufactured batteries will make their way outside China after all.

What was the prior platform? We can objectively say that massively paralleled small cells have current and impedance mismatch issues that self regulate in larger cells. If you can get the heat out of larger cells, it’s a win on many fronts.

Pretty sure they are prismatic currently.

Crap story with no facts. Reportedly BMW is building a moon rocket. Lots of people here need to learn critical thinking.

Here's the confirming press release from BMW.

https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/glob...n=BMW Group PressClub Global&utm_medium=Email

The new BMW round cells come with a standard diameter of 46 millimetres and two different heights. Compared to the prismatic cells of the fifth BMW battery cell generation, the nickel content in the sixth-generation BMW round cells is higher on the cathode side, while the cobalt content is reduced. On the anode side, the silicon content will be increased. As a result, the cell’s volumetric energy density will improve by more than 20 percent.

Exactly the point I’m making. Where does it have any mention of using ”Teslas 4680 battery format”?

I think he's saying that Tesla co-developed the 4680 format which BMW is now going to use. Kinda like how Maserati and Ferrari have used a Pentastar block.
I think the author is trying to say Tesla is better and BMW needs to use their batteries to compete. There does not need to be any mention of Tesla for this article to be complete. The BMW press release didn’t need to Tesla.

Apparently per BMW the 4680 format makes economic sense for them so it's not the author but it's BMW. The 4680 format was designed by Tesla so why wouldn't they mention it? It's just a statement of fact.

You obviously wouldn't expect BMW Group to announce that they're using the Tesla 4680 format would you?

First you criticize the article saying it isnt true even though it was reported by reuters.
(you do this when you dont like the sources message like Alex Voights taycan battery article)

But you didnt actually do any work before you made you claim I wasn't critically thinking.

Then I copied the BMW presss release that says BMW is changing from their prismatic form factors- and moving to the the 46MM cell.
Tesla pioneered and developed this form factor.

Here is the ”quote” by Reuters. You should try googling it. It doesn’t exist.

China’s EVE Energy Co Ltd will supply BMW with large cylindrical batteries for its electric cars in Europe, two people with knowledge of the matter said, as the German automaker follows Tesla Inc. in adopting the new technology
