Ok...Oil Gods...Give me your devine advice.

My wife has a 93 tercel. It pukes blue smoke until it warms up in the mornings. I will be changing the oil now for the rest of this cars life and want the best for it. Do i go with a HDEO (rotella, xd-3) to clean that sucker out?? Or go with a HM oil to help slow/stop the leak that is causing the smoking. I know people have had good luck with HM oil. I would prefer the HDEO because i believe they are better oils but i am worried about them cleaning too much = more leaks.

Let me know!!

I have a 93 Tercel that smokes and I have tried HM and high viscosity and neither has helped. Mine burns a quart every 300-400 miles regardless of the oil type. I haven't tried HDEO because I'm afraid of catalytic converter damage due to the high amount of additives combined with large amount of oil burned. Other than using oil, the little car runs well and is very reliable so, I just let it smoke.

I would say with a quart being used every 300-400 miles there is already damage to the cat being done. I would say that a HDEO would be a goos choice. I personally don't worry about the HDEO's killing cat's. I don't think it is as big of a problem as they say it is. As for cleaning to much. I do not think that will be a problem either. I actually think the more cleaning the better. The more cleaning a oil does to the ring pack, hyd. lifters, ect the better. Thats why a lot of BITOGer's like, no love GC. It is called the elicer by some. But GC being a syn is not a good choice for this engine since it uses oil. Now if your smoking, oil using problem is due to the possiblity of a stuck ring(S) and the oil you choose does a good job at cleaning the ring pack and groves and it stops smoking and all that. If you don't mind the extra cost I say then you are safe by that point to use GC or even M1 5W-40 T&S to keep your engine clean. That is if you do not have a seal leak and want the extra protection of a syn.

sounds like you have bad valve seals.

I've had them in my saturns, and before fixing them 15w40 HDEO did help quite a bit.

Does it puff blue smoke if you idle at a traffic light then punch the gas to take off? If so, valve seals.

actually it doesnt puff at idle...only happens when first started up..but i do notice that a bit of oil spits out of the tail pipe when it is shut off

I'd be doing cleaning with HDEO 15-40 delo
after winter maybe shell 5-40 rotella now.
For my daughters 92 tercel with the same
after a few too many 2 gt low OIC (on a 3.5 gt sump) I've slowed it down with thicker, pcv maintenance and an autoRX.

Plain thicker for an add a gt of oil if you are adding some in a virtual continous oil change is
20-50 Castrol GTX HM - super thick.

Recall that those Tercels (I had a 92) needed valve jobs (exhaust ones in particular). No oil treatment is going to help you on that one.
