I was tangentially involved in the mishap investigation surround Kara Hultgreen’s crash. The RIO in that crash, Matt Klemish, was a student of mine. Simply, Kara Hultgreen shouldn’t have been in the airplane. It was too much for her. Pilot error was the cause of the crash, but political pressure put her there, so her death lies in the hands of the politicians who chose her for her gender, instead of her competence.
That said, the fact that the Blues have only now, more than 25 years after Kara Hultgreen, added a female demo pilot suggests that the Blues have been waiting for a skilled pilot, not a “quota”. There’s a lot of female fighter pilots now. It’s been that way for a while.
Adding a female Blue Angel now, after decades of capable, qualified women assigned to fighter cockpits through merit, means that the criteria for Blues selection were finally met: desire (on the part of the pilot), skill, and personality. Don’t discount that latter point. Potential candidates must be acceptable to the team. You “rush” the Blues like you rush a fraternity. I’ve known a couple guys who went on be Blues. The rush process is critical. The “fit” is important.
Looks like the team found a pilot that fits their criteria for desire, skill, and personality.
She just happens to be female this time.
And the press, not the team, is making a big deal of it.
