What happens is that instead of having a perfect vertical cut, there is a line of crumbling snow on the already cleared side. So I end having to re-do the whole thing in staggered pass.

I assume you have skid shoes on the sides of the auger housing? These do wear out. I keep the edge of the scraper bar sharp and adjust the shoes so the scraper bar cleans down to the pavement.

We didn't get much snow last week ... but I dragged out the Ariens anyway. Wind was fierce and hands were numb in 15 minutes. Hand warmers would have been divine. Luckily I was done in less than 30.

I was slumming in a Lowes a few weeks ago and walked by the snowblowers (what they had left) and looked at the ones they had (for no reason). One was about 30” (Toro? Murray?) and had the electric switch that controlled the horizontal and vertical chute arches. I'd love to try this but if I am in a big storm and this tiny switch fails, there are not enough swears in the English language to express my frustration at that point.
I'll stick with manual (preferably gated) chute controls.

The worm drive chute control on the old Ariens is their worst feature. Newer buckets have greatly reduced the lock to lock turns
Artic highs push the snow out to sea south of us. The sun is high enough to melt any flurries we get.
My Chonda powered 24" Ariens has done great. It sits in the shed ready to go.
