Ok, I know we are not supposed to talk about politics so I wont mention names. I do ask the moderators indulgence to deal with this political issue because this is an oil forum and I dont believe the topic is unfounded on this particular board. We have an off topic board regarding motor oil so I will ask for some indulgence.
One of the prime issues however in this election is the issue of oil and I think its relevant to this forum.
Im aghast and angry and mad that the words blood for oil have been used in the campaign and have become an issue for Americans.
We have a presidential candidate who is claiming that we put American soldiers in harms way so we could have cheaper oil. Others line the streets claiming that the oil companies are evil and gouging the general public.
I have many friends, family, and personal experiences of the damage that was done during the years of low oil prices to those in the industry. Low oil prices were winked at by the public when gas was cheap and motor oil on the shelves was available at low prices. I can tell you that layoffs happened, friends were furloughed, and family members denied raises. Low prices were problemtatic in the mid to late 90s and that wasnt long ago. Now the public seems to resent the same industry actually making a profit and the politicians are flaming the fans of fire people feel when they fill their cars up with gas.
During times of prosperity for the oil companies the politicians bring out the whipping sticks and blame the greedy oil companies for turning a profit. This is America and companies should make profits. Profit is good. You can even participate in it by buying stock in the company if you want. How great is that?
This is America. The heroes who shed their blood and gave their lives for this country didnt do it for a bottle of oil or a tank of gas. They didnt do it so oil companies could turn a profit.
Blood was shed for an idea and an ideal. The idea that one could choose their life and raise their standard of living and the ideal that citizens could live life in the pursuit of happiness.
Freedom is a word with 7 letters. Freedom rings true. Freedom is a gift and a promise and an achievement that Americans should respect and cherish.
Oil prices are set by free market conditions and not by middle easter tyrants and thats how it should be. When there is more supply than demand the prices fall. When there is more demand than supply the prices rise. Worldwide demand of oil is rising faster than production and supply and the prices are rising.
Prices do affect normal Americans and there wasnt much compassion for those working in the oil industry when prices were low so lets give them their due and right to make a profit when they can. All industries live in cycles.
The politicians need to leave Chicago and the trading pits alone. If they think oil companies are ripping people off then go buy stock in an oil company. If you want to participate in investing in the price of the rise of oil then open a futures account and buy some oil contracts in Chicago.
America is about freedom. Here we have the opportunity to participate in the investment potential of oil and the companies that find it produce it and drill for it. We dont have some King sitting in his harem controlling the oil industry and buying a new Mercedes for each of his 5 wives every 3 months.
Blood was not shed for oil. It was shed for the right to invest, for the right to work hard and be rewarded for your effort, for the right to choose how you live, for the right for markets and economic principles to dictate prices rather than those that would control and dictate through the use of monopolies or unworthy power.
Our country has defended freedom across the world and the only land or property that weve asked for to do it is a few small parcels of land in which to bury our fallen.
Im sickened and outraged that greed has eclipsed the ideals, purpose and vision of our forefathers.
We shed not blood for oil. We shed our blood for the right to invest and participate in the oil industry or to not participate if that is the choice.
Every American can open a stock investment account at Scottrade and invest in an oil company and it costs $7 to do it. There are a whole lot of Arabs that will never own even a small part or portion of the riches they have underground. Our markets are what decide the price of oil and not the dictates of a few with privelage and Im thankful and grateful for the freedom behind our markets and for what we have. If one American has shed one drop of blood to defend free markets then lets call him a hero. We fight for ideals in this country and not for pictures of dead presidents. The ideals of profit, free economy, and free markets should appeal to all and we can be thankful for them even when gasoline is $2 per gallon.
Next time this issue comes to mind and we think about our love for oil and our vehicles then lets stop and think for a small moment of the freedom we have that was built on those willing to sacrifice their happiness so we could pursue ours.
The shedding of blood for oil should not be a campaign issue. It should be a cause for celebration that markets democratically decide the prices we pay for those things that give us happiness rather than the dictates of a few.
America still has its problems but lets honor the sacrifices made for our ability to seek and achieve both our failures and our successes.
The concept of freedom transcends campaign issues and lets recognize that fact for what it really is rather than an election hot point. Freedom needs to ring.
