Bleeding GMT400 brakes

I've had a flurry of topics regarding GMT400 brakes because one just kicked my behind, but I think it wouldn't hurt to have a thread specifically about bleeding  practices these systems. If it matters, the later years like '98/9.

I at least have a few questions:

1) when you activate the ABS bleed, the scanner prompts you to press and hold the pedal, but where should this be? Lightly depressed? Mid-travel? To the floor? Does it matter?

2) I just read of the OTC 7853 which is meant to depress and equalize the prop valve "nibs" in the ABS unit. Does this help? I ordered the tool for future use because, well, it's a tool I don't have and that's simply not acceptable.

3) there's always talk of depressing and bleeding the valve at the ABS HCU itself -- I'm unclear if this is a substitute for activating the ABS bleed procedure with a scanner, or are BOTH supposed to be done? It seems most people bleeding here are weekend warriors trying to skirt a bidirectional scanner, but maybe not.

On my old '99 Yukon I just gravity bled the system to exchange fluid to avoid doing the scan tool procedure and any potential mishaps. And I have a PC based scan tool program that was capable.
Never had any issues doing it that way over the 220k miles I put on it.

I'm also curious if anyone has thoughts about simply leaving a pressure bleeder hooked up while activating the ABS bleed?

I'm not necessarily expecting better results but if running the ABS bleed more than once this would save time because unstrapping the awkward pressure bleed attachment from the oh-so-stupid mc reservoir design takes time. I leave it submerged so I don't have to purge it again but even so messing with the strap is a time suck.

I have owned my 98 K1500 since new and have done all of the brake jobs and brake fluid bleeds on it and I have never had to ABS bleed it and it still has a good brake pedal to this day.
I blew a rear brake line on my 98 K3500 and never did an ABS bleed on it either and the brakes work great on it.
