Those engines will run on darn near anything..

When I had my S10 with the 4.3, it was quite happy with the synthetic blend 5w30 (valvoline durablend) I gave it...

I used whatever namebrand 5w30 that was on sale in my 97 Sonoma 4.3.

A few times Valvoline conventional, some mobil 1, and havoline.

Back when I had no idea what I was doing and still did good by it.

Even GM in a TSB says that using a GF-5 oil is ok in place of dexos1. I would just use any oil that meets the GF-5 standard, which means, you have a lot of choices.

Any xxW30 and your golden. Had an 02 s10 4.3l that ran like a champ even with coolant leaking in through the plastic manifold gaskets (finally replaced the gaskets w metal ones at 80k miles). I used all kinds of Dino, blends and syn 5 & 10 w30 and the truck ran perfect on all. I kinda miss that s10

You own a Blazer also?

No, mine are a Ford Taurus, Vulcan engine and a Citröen C5. But they run Dexos1 or synthium 3000 (its a great group 3, and I bet it meets Dexos1) nowadays. the Vortec isn't a very critic for oil, also. You'll only "need" those for extended drains or towing, IMO. I bought the GM Original Dexos 1 made by Cosan (ExxonMobil in rio), the color is exactly the same as Mobil 1 5w30, the smell is like more ocre, kindda amina. But I bet the GM is Group 3 since you'd buy it for half price or less than Mobil 1, on ML.

P.S. Forogot to say to you that you'll find the lower prices at this oil "GM Original Dexos1" 5w30, when searching for, on ML. Beleza?

4.3 is a great engine. I put 300,000 kms on one. Mobil 1 5W30. Never used oil. 180 psi compression on all 6 cylinders when I sold it. It was a work truck but was babied since new. I miss my old Chevy.

Guys I need some hElp to decide beetween an API SN/GF-5 5w30 Full Synthetic oil vs. an HDEO 15w40 mineral ACEA E7/API CI-4 /SL, I found both of these oils in a fairly good price, but the HDEO it's cheaper.

5w30 it's from Lubrax, made by Petrobras, sold here in Brazil
The HDEO it's the Rimula RT4X from Shell (same as rotella line in the US, I guess)

It's worth mention that the PCMO does not have any OEM approved specs, just attend API SN and ILSAC GF-5 norms.

By the other hand the HDEO has a lot of OEM approvals, like:

Global DHD-1; Caterpillar ECF-2, ECF-1-A; Cummins 20078; DDC: 93K215; Deutz: DQC III-10; Mack: EO-M+,MAN:M3275-1; MB 228.3; JASO DH-1;Volvo VDS-3.

Even though the 5w30 has an higher API S rating, does the HDEO has better detergency and protection since it's approved by ACEA E7 and a lot of OEMs??

Your owners manual specs 10-40 and 20-50 cause thats what you should use in the tropics. getting advise from up north your gonna hear 5-30 ect. you require no 5 winter weight cold flow properties in the Tropics,, None. use 10-40 or 15-40 HDEO. 20-50 if you really punishing it in some heat and terain.

I'm assuming your 4.3 is long out of warranty. I see no problem using a 5w30 all year. However, if you find the HDEO at a decent price, that will work fine, too, and as you see, I'm not afraid of using an HDEO in a gasoline engine.

I ran my son's Blazer on Pennzoil Conventional 5w30 as long as he owned it which was about 6 years. That was a good engine.
