Blatant Age Discrimination

I'm a believer in the saying that a cynic is often a frustrated idealist.

Managers don't want idealists. They want "suck up, kick down" people. Like them.

In telecom, managers want the best ________ kissers retained while the true talent with the good ideas are shown the door. There's so much dead wood in my office it's sickening.

try getting axed at age 53 with 3 kids in college. Best job since has been about 20k$ less per annum. I am a college gradgeate. Why anybody would prefer a wet behind the ears 22yr old to somebody with 30+ yrs experience escapes me. Most of them cant troubleshoot or diagnose stuff worth a darn. Stamina doesnt enter into the picture because it wasnt hard physical labor. I can still work most 30 yr old guys into the ground anyway.

Allways been self employed. Pay sucks, insurance must come from wife's employment, but I can't be fired!

Obbop, bathe twice as often and you'll only be half as bad!

The whole wage structure in corporate America is screwy. Young workers have more stamina and are least needy in the form of health and family benefits. Why doesn't corporate America just follow this supply and demand by paying top dollar to young workers, and have the wage decrease as the worker ages? After all, shunning workers aged 40+ is simply a veiled form of this practise.

Yep, works every time...
A young employee was having trouble fixing a piece of equipment. The equipment was old, but sturdy and well serviced, and up to now had performed well for the end user. Finally, in despiration, the repair department called Floyd, who had retired several years earlier. After some negotiations, Floyd agreed to come and look at the equipment, to see if he could spur the beast into action again. Floyd wasn't there ten minutes before he told the young employee to get a certain part needed, and install it like the instructions said to. When Floyd left, he gave a hand written bill of 4000.00 to his old employer. The employer was taken back and asked why he thought he should be paid that much. Floyd replied that any monkey can replace parts, some monkeys can read service manuals, but only one monkey usually knows HOW the equipment is supposed to work, and makes it do that with the right part, instead of the shotgun approach. Floyd asked what the young tech was going to do next if he hadn't gotten involved. The tech replied that his next choice was a "black box" valued at 10,000. The employer paid Floyd, and saved 5 grand in the process. On a personal note, I'll be hornswaggled if some young atomic punk makes anywhere near what I do. They pay me for experience, and accuracy and that is how it should be.

I too have experienced situations where a younger worker spends hours trying to gather and interpret data in the lab, where 10 minutes of my time zeroes right into the answer. Unfortunately, management doesn't see this when they are sitting in their meetings, poring over figures on a screen shot from a beamer, and making decisions.
