Blackout Plates

Governor Rod Blagojevich made a comment many years ago that IL should charge more for license plates since so many people in the state were willing to shell out extra money for vanity or specialty plates. I didn't want to give him the wrong impression so I never got those plates. :ROFLMAO:

And I have to say that it was a very happy day when Dad's Ranger finally qualified for Antique Plates.
We have Collector plates in MN that you can get if the vehicle is more than 20 years old, but it can't be a daily driver. I'm not sure how they would know?

We used to be able to get these in PA but not anymore.

PA used to have a DARE plate with black background and white/red lettering. I have one but don't have the old registration for it so they won't let me re-activate it. The new DARE plate is exactly like the normal bland PA plate (white with blue/yellow)

Illinois has 2 categories - a true antique plate with restrictions on when you are allowed to drive, and an "extended" antique plate that's more lenient (and more expensive). Vehicle has to be at least 25 years old. The Ranger is not driven much so I'll gladly deal with the restrictions for the savings.

I know a handful of states (IA, MN, OK) offer blackout license plates and there is a bill going through the legislature in my state that I'm hoping is approved to create these as an option here too. I'm a big fan of the clean design, and they look great especially on black or white vehicles. Thoughts? Does anyone have these issued on your own vehicle(s)? If passed and available I'll pay to have these on both of my cars and the bike.
I'm sick of them already.
The irony of paying for something you don't see, is something the Sheep don't quite grasp.

Not what I thought this topic was going to be about.

We have had that style of plate in my state in Aus for many, many years. I thought about getting them at one point but my car is 30 years old with 30 year old period correct plates. However, if I ever decide to swap to antique club registration I would then have to use the black antique plates.

General observation is that a high percentage of aggressive drivers tend to have the blackout MN plates. Call it an early warning so to speak... (Not scientific by any means, but work on the roads for any amount of time - driving or actually working on the road in maintenance, construction, etc... and you'll figure it out).

Also, the blackout plates have rankled the law enforcement community in MN who used to have the only black plate sold in MN that benefitted the MN100 Club for fallen responders... the extra donation went to that fund, vs the extra on the blackout plate going to the State.

Colorado added these last year and I think they're tackey looking. The have red and blue versions as well.

I refuse to give the state a penny more than I have too. Even still, meh. Not a fan of the “BLACK IT ALL OUT!” craze.
I've seen a Honda Pilot Black Edition. It had white paint and black wheels with some dark chrome trim.... :ROFLMAO:

Illinois has the White Sox plates, our only black plates that I am aware of. The funny part is when it's a Cubs fan who wants them. I've seen several where they painted out the Sox logo and name (apparently they'd rather walk a mile in molten lava than risk appearing as a Sox fan).

Yep I've noticed them in CO. And yeah, i think they're ugly but if people want them....well, there's a reason the Autozone bling accessory aisle exists.

Colorado also has radio spots begging you to pay extra $ when you register for the "Colorado Wild" pass

The pitch is made by an avalanche forecaster who essentially says please help me keep my job by paying more when you register your vehicle.

NO

They keep trying to tack on pennies here and dollars there, and acting like, "What's the big deal?? It's only a few bucks! Aren't you a good citizen???"

CA has sky high registration as it is. You can get blackout and other speciality licence plates; $50 plus $40 annual. They ain't that special...
It was special when you had to have had the car continuously registered since the 1960's. Gave you and your car "cred". Now that any yahoo with money can get them, like you said, it's not special.

In Vermont we have a "Vermont Strong" front plate to mount over the regular front plate, totally obscuring it. This special plate is good forever and costs $35 one time. This "Vermont Strong" plate has no numbers. So much for the argument that readable front plates are necessary for law enforcement.

In Florida, I'm kinda fond of the yellow background! :ROFLMAO:
If they limited it to just the yellow background (which is not used for all plates) it would be fine. The big issue is the pictures of various things special ordered (dolphins, turtles, surfers, etc.) of which some colors are darn close to the colors of the numbers/letters making deciphering the ID at a glance pretty difficult for the average person.

Quoting myself, I stumbled upon a URaBus today that proves my point. Check out that wing that could snag birds outta the sky! SICK

I can almost hear Vin Diesel running and diving across the parking lot as he screams, "NAWSE!!!"
