BITOG wisdom/sage advice.

Don’t just call people when you want something, they might write you off ( burn bridge ).

I have burned a few bridges when people do that.

Work colleagues are not your friends is something I should have paid attention to years ago ( of coarse there are some exceptions ).

I sat in the indicated seat and he looked at me and said, "Young man, never dip you pen in the office inkwell."

"Next."
When I was 14 years old, I had a weekend and summer job with a fellow who installed carpet, tile, and linoleum. I worked for him until I graduated high school. I learned a lot from him.

One day I told Leo that I had an interest in the girl who lived across the street from me, and Leo's advice was "Never :poop: where you eat."

You are not special
Another gem from my Dad, except his version was, "Do you think you are special and don't have to do the crap work everyone else has to do?" That taught me there is no work beneath me. Growing up on a farm there is a lot of less desirable work that needs to get done. To this day, I will do whatever needs to get done. No matter how much is stinks, how dirty it is, how hot or cold and miserable it is, etc. What a blessing to teach a kid. Thanks Dad.

All my kiddos do house work and chores regardless of gender and age. We even have evenings my wife and I don’t make dinner that we call “fend for yourself nights.” It’s worded that way on purpose.

Teaches kids what they don’t want to do for a living!

Don't put your personal information on the Internet, especially a oil discussion forum .

I don't think that an oil forum is especially important to not post personal info on. I'd say that goes for ANY internet forum.

Years ago I spent a lot of time on a Motorcycle forum. I had met many of the members in person. I considered them to be real friends. So I was posting info about a professional racing team I was on, including lots of pictures. Understand I posted nothing that would violate an NDA, but someone (I have no idea who) anonymously contacted the (well known) owner of the team, with links to the website and specific thread in question.

The team owner wasn't impressed with the anonymous coward who TRIED to cause problems for me, nor was I. It was an eye-opening moment that made me realize that level of sharing just couldn't continue.

To this day I don't know if the person who tried to cause issues for me, was a member of that website, or maybe just someone just reading the website, who weren't even a member.

Bottom line: Be careful what you post online.

Never forget the old six degrees of separation meme.
How often have you met someone who knows someone you have in common with them?
Be careful about venting to people at large or online.

There’s an order to things:
1. Get an education
2. Get a job.
3. Get married.
4. Have kids

Do not mess up the order, you will make your life much harder than it needs to be.
C. 1970*, President Nixon commissioned a study on poverty in America.

IIRC, the researchers found that 78% of America's poor had done at least one (and usually more than one) of these three things:

- had a child out of wedlock,

- had a child before age 20, and

- had not completed high school.

* This study was cited in Time or Newsweek around 1995.
