My Dad told me this often when I was growing up. "Don't think for one second I don't know what you did. If we have to have this conversation again, the outcome will not be fun."
My Dad meant what he said and said what he meant. If he said it wouldn't be a fun outcome, that was enough for me to stop doing whatever stupid thing I was doing. I knew 100% that he would follow through on his "not so fun" promise.

Never bet on an inside straight. That was my father's advice as I left for college. It applies to far more than just poker.

When I started graduate school, all the new grad students had to meet one on one with the dean of the chemistry department. He was an older guy. He yelled "Next", a guy came out of his office and I went into is office. I sat in the indicated seat and he looked at me and said, "Young man, never dip you pen in the office inkwell."

Or make sure you at least have a well written cohabitation agreement ( common law ) or prenup if you shack up/marry someone below your income.
I dodged a bullet and had to learn the hard way ( some said you learn more by a good scare in an earlier post ) but never made the same mistake again.
Edit: my late father tried to give me advice about it but I didn’t think it was something to be concerned about.
