Biting the bullet on torque converter replacement

Due to torque converter shudder I should probably replace the converter on my '13 Dodge Charger 5.7 Hemi R/T. There apparently are no new NAG1 722.6 converters being manufactured to my knowledge. People seem to go with reman units and I can get one on RockAuto for $203 after shipping, tax, and core return.

I was contemplating getting an FTI or Circle D performance 2,600 rpm lock up converter instead of a reman. I cannot verify the actual stall speed of the factory converter other than the veribage "medium stall". These are $800 but promise additional reliability and performance over stock but there is the possibility this converter will require a custom tune which is even more money.

The car is not modified however forums have stated these converters drive like stock until you hit the gas at which time the higher stall speed is noticeable.

Just deciding whether I want to do this on my back in the driveway or let someone with a lift install it.

That's a big job for a cheap replacement- but some converters are just stupid for pricing. I found a guy who rebuilds non molested oem to a better spec. No need for CircleD and such.

Tons of places offer rebuilt units from mild to wild. I would look again. Are you using your phone to searchbecause I cut and paste "NAG1 722.6 converters" into google and got all kinds of results.

Are you keeping this car until the wheels fall off or as a collector item? If so do not go cheap! Go with a shop that does all work in house, has quality control at each step, stands behind product, has a great reputation in the industry. If you use it hard or plan to mod it for more power down the road plan ahead now buy once cry once!

Change the transmission oil and see if the shudder goes away. If you can do a full replacement, about 11 quarts, through a transmission cooler line. Or you can drain the pan, refill, drive a few miles and do another drain and fill.
