Patman, a computer running Mac OS 10 needs to do some maintenance on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Remember that underneath Mac OS 10 is basically a Unix (or BSD) operating system. Unix computers are usually running 24 hours a day. But most people that own Macintosh Computers shut them off at night. If you download a free program called MacJanitor, you can perform these maintenance tasks yourself at the end of the day before you shut your computer off.

You can also perform the maintenance tasks by going into the Terminal and typing the proper stuff in at the prompt, but unless you know a lot about Unix I would not recommend this.

Patman,

I leave mine at home on for months at a time with no problems. As far as Maintaining it goes. Pick up the Feb 2005 Macworld magazine. It has a great disaster prevention write up. Mac janitor is just 1 small part of the big picture. I use Disk Warrior (new directory), Mac Janitor (os scripts), cache out X (delete disk caches) and disk utility (repair permissions) to perform maintenance every 30 days or so.

enjoy!!!!!!!!

Frank
