Bigger than stock filters

Ok. I drive a 99 Grand Am with the "ticking time bomb" 3.4L V-6. Hehehe, just a bit of humor there!
The stock AC Delco filter is a pf-47, but I know the pf-52 made for the 4.3L V-6 is the same diameter but twice as long. Many Grand Am people use the PF-52. However, I had a very reputable auto mechanic tell me to never ever switch sizes of filters from stock because bypass valves and such, are calibrated to release at certain pressures that are calibrated for specific engines. So he's implying that the PF-52 migt go into bypass when the Pf47 wouldn't, in my engine. Is this total BS? Can someone clarify if it really is safe to go with the longer pf-52 for my car? It makes sense that a longer filter is much better, especially for extended drain intervals. Muchos Gracious

The mechanic is wrong. The larger filter will go into bypass LESS OFTEN, so it's going to filter better. Plus by being larger, it will flow more oil too and have a larger dirt capacity. Longer oil filters are ALWAYS better.

I had the Walmart Clerk (he was about 16 years old) tell me the same thing one time. Yes-you should always use the 52 if there is room like Patman said. They are the same except for length. You have to be careful though-some GM's have the filter a little too close to the frame and the engine rocking on its mounts could damage filter. My son has the 2000 GrandAm 3.4. The PF 52 is fine for this application.

Do you mean the PF-52? I thought that was the longer filter.

I believe the PF51 and the PF52 are the same filter diminsionally. The 52 has the anti-drainback valve the 51 does not. Neither filter has a bypass valve. GM engines have the bypass valve built into the block.

Excellent info guys, thanks a bunch. Now, I hear that GM is still marketing the UPF52 ultragaurd gold filters for some applications? Anyone know where I can still get these? Pep Boys use to be the only place that sold the ultragaurd gold's, but they no longer have them.

There are some auto parts houses that handle AC Delco parts. Check with them. If they don't have them in stock they can order. May have to buy them in case lots. I bought some and they were 6 ea to a case @ $8.00 each. There is a place here in Lubbock, TX. named Bristo Battery & Supply that can get them for you. (806) 745-2052.
