BG 44K Formula has been changed!!!!

Just recieved some replenishment stock of 44K here at the dealership I work for and was noticing that the front of the can has changed slightly. I then turned the can over and was stunned, they changed the formula, cheapened it even. Looks like it's time to find a new fuel system cleaner.

Ingredients of the OLD 44K:
---------------------------
Polyetheramine (CAS N/A)
Heavy Aromatic Petroleum Distillates (CAS 64742-94-5)
Hydrotreated Heavy Petroleum Distillates (CAS 64742-48-9)
Napthalene (CAS 91-20-3)
1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene (CAS 95-63-6)

Ingredients of the NEW 44K:
---------------------------
Stoddard Solvent (CAS 8052-41-3)
Hydrotreated Kerosene (CAS 64742-47-8)
Light Aromatic Solvent Naptha (CAS 64742-95-6)


I don't believe for a minute that it works better than the old stuff. Way to go BG!
 
I could be mistaken, but the last time I checked the MSDS for Marvel Mystery Oil, I recall it being hauntingly similar!!!

BG Products always struck me as a marketing scheme. If the crap really worked that well, why on earth would you limit your market to ONLY a few service shops???
 
When I was working at a different dealership, I used BG 44K on many occasions and found it to do diddly squat.

So far Fuel Power is the only additive that I've ever used that gave me a noticeable difference in performance in just the first tankful. It's not like this car is neglected either...Before FP I'd give it a dose of Schaeffer's #131 about once a month and always run quality fuels.
FP is working great so far. I'm quite impressed.

On a side note...It makes my exhaust smell really funky. Kind of like "Sharpie" pen ink mixed with a normal (catalyzed) car exhaust.

You could use that same analogy for Snap-On tools, as in they also have a limited market, but their products are generally FAR superior to say, Craftsman.

The OLD 44K actually worked very well. I have used it in the past with very good results. I'm just a little miffed that they would take a PROVEN product such as this and completely change the formula. **** , IIRC Stoddard solvent is the first ingredient in GOJO hand cleaner, how effective do you think that will be in an internal combustion engine?

FP is working great so far. I'm quite impressed.

Could be a home-brew, although I have no idea where you could purchase straight polyetheramine from.

TomH, maybe they looked at some of the bearing overlay analysis results posted here and realized a more gentle cleaning was in order!

so what does this mean for me? An avid fan of BG 44K? They haven't changed their formula for their Induction System Cleaner (ISC), have they? I use that stuff too.

Their "MI 3K+" stuff was, as far as I know, a formula borrowed from Chevron Techron. They pay Chevron for the rights to use the techron formula.

So who knows enough to know if this change is for the better or worse?

Guess I just gotta stick to Techron now.

I was under the impression that PEA is what Techron(and other brand secret formulas) really is. Supposedly polyetheramine is one of the best available FI/Topend/intakevalve cleaners available.

Without PEA, BG44k is nothing special and not worth the $20 per can. The question is, does it needed to be listed in the MSDS if it is carried in the solvent/distillate???????

Besides Regane, Castleproducts sells "dragon power" which is a PEA based FI cleaner.

Any others???

My thoughts exactly. And, I'm pretty sure that if 44K still contained polyetheramine, it would still be listed in the ingredients, if not as polyetheramine, then something like "NJ trade secret" etc.
 
As far as I know, things listed in the MSDS are considered health hazard, or hazardous chemicals of the total composistion of the product. If they left it out of the MSDS, maybe its not haz material, but how can somethign with that sorta name be non-hazardous?
