Hello all,

Anyone here know anything about Mobile 1 Extended Performance?
Is it better then regular Mobil 1?
I have a 2006 Subaru WRX with 7,000 miles on it. I have been running convectional oil in it since I got it with 2000 mille intervals. I was thinking of changing to a synthetic and going to a 6,000 or 7,500 oil change interval. What kind of oil do you guys think I should go with? I hear Amsoil is really good. I’m easy on the car for the most part, but this summer im going to do auto crossing. I also am going to do Cobb stage 1 then stage 2.

Please let me know what you think I should go with.

If you're going to mod out a WRX, then there's only one choice AFAIK, and that's Redline. It's the quintessential oil for turbochargers.

Otherwise, M1 EP is pretty good stuff, as are most of the usual full-syn candidates (GC, Amsoil, etc.). But if you're going to flip close to $6 for M1 EP, you might as well spend the $7 for RL.

Your OCI pattern shows prudent understanding of the limitations of conventionals in a turbo. I agree with you. Still, I'd be wary of extended OCIs in a HO/HP turbo such as yours even with a full syn until some UOAs proved otherwise.

dont forget this forum isnt a scooby board.. so most people probably have no idea what cobb stage 1 and 2 are. how many miles do you drive a year? id probably run a good synthetic like mobil 1, m1 ep, amsoil, redline.. anything would work just fine. id go 5k intervals depending on how much you drive in a year.

EXACTLY! What are the boost levels for those mod packages? If they push it much past 5-8 psi over stock, I'd stick with the "better" synthetics (Amsoil, Redline, RP racing, GC, etc.), regardless of OCIs.

As has been said by other posters, stick with the top tier synthetics for that WRX and you'll do fine. I would carefully monitor the oil life via UOA's if you are considering extending the change intervals out at all. The turbo and "spirited" driving can really beat up the oil. But the Subaru engines (NA) are usually quite easy on the oil so you might hit a happy medium with it.

Enjoy the Subie-I have a 2005 Impreza Outback that is great!

I'd use RL 5w30 or GC. M1 EP would be another good choice along with Amsoil S3k.

RL 5w30.

But I still don't see why a 15w40 cannot be substituted, if changed at shorter intervals.

I have a Cobb Stage 2 2004 WRX and run AMSOIL S2K and now S3K with very good results.

As you can see from the UOA link above, I do appx. 10K mile OCI and frequent the race track during those 10K miles. AMSOIL, Redline, GC, Mobil 1, all are good oils and will protect well, but I think you would be hard pressed to find better UOA results than I have had with AMSOIL considering how much I abuse my car.

There is not much merit to this unsubstantiated statement as Redline is not the only oil that is designed/good for turbocharged applications.

The Subie (newer at least) turbos are pretty gentle on oil what with the cooling provided. Use whatever syn/weight your engine "likes".

On my LGT I went from M1 10w30 to 5w-40 TSUV to Rotella syn 5w-40 and at my 7,500 intervals the oils still look good. A UOA on the pre-EP M1 said the oil was good to go longer and still had good TBN.

You might want to keep on frequent dino changes until you're flushed of manufacturing silica.

Thank you all for your advice!

I think I am leaning toward RL. It sounds like it is the best for turbo engines.
With the Cobb Stage 1 & 2 I am not sure how much it boost the boost over stock, but I do know that HP goes from 230 too 250 and toque goes from 235 to 300 in stage 1.

What do you guys think about Royal Purple? I think I have heard about it a few time on these boards as being a really good oil. Is it good for turbo engines? Also what kind of oil filter should I go with? Till now I have just been getting my oil changes done at the dealer, but for synthetic thy use Mobil 1 and thy charge $75!!!! So you can see why I do not want to pay to have them do and just do it my self. So should I sick with stock oil filter or should I use the Mobil filter or something else?

Do you guys know anything about oil additives like pro long and others like it?
Are thy worth the money? Do thy work? If so what is the best one?

Thank you for all the Help!!!

The POE used in RL is the most thermally stable base oil commercially available today. And high thermal loading is what a turbocharged environment is all about. POE used in high ratios may present some other shortcomings, but thermal stability absolutely isn't one of them.

I stand by my statement, and I'm not alone with it.

I do not disagree that the POE basestocks are superior for their thermal stability/capacity, however any good Group III or Group IV is perfectly capable of providing what is necessary for turbo charged applications.

Don't get me wrong here I think Redline is as good as anything available, but I don't agree that it stands alone at the top for turbo applications.

I personally am not that impressed with the Royal Purple UOA's I've seen posted here, with the exception of their Racing 21 forumulation which has been used in at least one WRX (UOA is posted in that forum, you can probably find it with the search) with good results. But the Racing 21 is pretty expensive, and I'm not sure you really are getting better results with that oil versus a cheaper synthetic such as Redline, Amsoil or GC.

Stick with the OEM Subaru oil filter made by Toyo Roki...it's an excellent quality filter and can be had for approx. $5/each if you buy them in bulk. The part number you want is 15208AA100.

Steer clear of those types of additives. The only "additives" that folks here on BITOG have had very good luck with are Auto-RX and Lube Control's LC20 and FP60. Check out the Additives, Fuel,Oil, Cleaners forum for more info on them.
