Have to ask.

What is the best value 5W-20 oil under $3/qt based on test results on here?

I'm not interested in extended use oil, just one that will go 6000miles easy as pie with a decent TBN at the end.

I'm thinking best value is based on quality of the base and additive package as a function of cost/case.

thanks

Up here in Canada I'd have to say Canadian Tire's house brand of 5w20, it can be found on sale for $2 a quart quite often and the UOA of it in my wife's car showed it to perform well and it's additive pack looked pretty good too.

All is not lost for you guys in the US though, as this oil is most likely Shell's Formula 5w20. We do know for a fact that Shell makes all of Canadian Tire's oils, and chances are good that they wouldn't bother making a completely different formula just for Canadian Tire, so they'd just use an existing product. I understand Shell's oils can be had pretty cheap from Costco in the US, is this correct?

I agree. For what you see available, and for its price, Motorcraft syn blend is tops. Another great performer would be Pennzoil yellow bottle, with its Group II+ base.

Today at WalMart Pennzoil conventional in all grades was on sale for $10.00 for a 5 qt jug, with an instant rebate of $1, making it $9.00.
Valvoline conventional was on sale too for $10.00 for a 5.5 qt jug.
Both good oils at a good prices.

Ditto. I'd use it without reservations.

I would say any of the oils mentioned would be fine. I think castrol gtx or quaker state would be fine as well. Any of them can be had for cheap at wally world if you shop there.

I like Motorcraft 5w-20. Far as I can tell its the only 'syn-blend' under $3/qt at Wallyworld. Any of the other oils under $3/qt are also very good too. I feel good enough about it to keep using it on a 6mo/5000mi service with the occasional high rpm run.

At Pep Boys you can buy 5 quarts of Pennzoil Yellow Bottle and a Purolater filter for $12.99 and get a $3 rebate- I think it's a great deal even without the rebate.

i am using motorcraft synblend right now...dirt cheap too..mobil clean and pennzoil are both 10 bucks and less at china mart

How would you say the Motorcraft or Shell Clean "value" oil stacks up based on UOA/VOA to the SuperTech oil I used on my 1st fill? I'd like to go buy a few cases of what IS the best now.

On lesson learned I had with my truck and Accord. is I found a decent oil for them, based on my testing at least 3 times and found the perfect interval to change, the oil got hard to find and I had to change. I used Chevron and that switched to Shell clean that I still use on a 99 V6 Accord. That's expensive and not good. Would rather get it right and load up now.

Problem with my Fit is the oil weight is different than the Accord and hard to find. 5W-20 is not on most shelves. The good news is this 1.5 l holds less that 4 qts

I have the SuperTech in the eng now and if it IS considered to be as good (based on data) as the two suggested I'll just purchase a case or 3 and be set. If it's a verified step down in quality, I search for the Motorcraft or Shell clean and get that now. Of course I have no test data to say just trying to be efficient and use your expert advice. In any case I will test for TBN to make sure I get the interval right. Don't trust the Honda oil life meter yet.

Thanks

It seems a lot of stores want you to buy a filter or give you a special deal when you do. Sort of like McDonalds wants you to add fries to your order. Can anybody confirm that profit margins on filters are a lot higher than on oil?

Without doing the BOGO/REBATE limbo, MC is probably the best value in over the counter/everyday pricing.

They one I saw today was a syn blend and was around $3 even . Is the the MC one that does so well?

PS I have 12 brand new Honda filters and now I want the oil lol
At the cost of fuel, it's not worth it to chase sales and very oil brands. I'm stocking up for 75k miles
