I have to drive down there in June for a one week class and wonder what would be a best route as far as scenic. I have to stop by Columbia, SC as well so the route needs to loop through there. I prefer to stay away from I-95 because it is just horribly boring.

I85 to richmond then up I95 is how I go. You could likely get over to the coast and take US 17 or one of those roads, but Im sure it will take a good deal longer.

You can also grab US 301 down near the NC border rather than getting onto the I95, and take that to Annapolis then shoot over 50. That is likely gong to be a good bet for quickness. Ive done that one before.

Anyway to avoid I-95 after Richmond and I-20 after Columbia, SC. Those two routes take a cake for being total bore. I am assuming I-85 is a total bore as well. Is U.S. 1 an option any decent portion of the trip. I wish I could take some part of a Blue Ridge Mountain road from VA to NC but that would be 300 miles out of the way.
