Best place to get UOA with TBN

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here and I just have to say this place is nerd heaven for lubricant info. I just purchased a 2002 7.3 PSD and want to perform an UOA @ 3000 miles to obtain a baseline. Currently using Rotella 15w40. Very interested in finding out how much the oil has sheared down over this interval. Where is the most economical place to get UOA with TBN's done. I would like to do this on a regular basis so I can evaluate other brands/viscosity. Thanks in advance for any help you all provide.

Blackstone Labs can do it. Their standard oil test is $25.00 but that doesn't include TBN, which is $10 extra.

Their sample kits (container, secondary plastic bag, cardboard mailing tube with label) are free.

You can get a WIX oil analysis kit on Amazon and from other places for less than $20. It includes TBN. Sometimes they go on sale for a lot less than that.

Blackstone may include more detail though, not sure.

Polaris has a better price and you avoid the dumb comments from Blackstone and you get oxidation and nitration. People who focus on TBN and not TBN and oxidation are making a mistake.

At this point when Polaris marks the oxidation "high". I talked to Polaris on this point and its not a simple answer like if its higher than 20, its abnormal. Its more like what is the increase over the oxidation from a VOA. They said the oxidation is actually higher in virgin synthetic oil than dino. If you read through my recent UOA (for my Jeep) you will find some pointers to additional reading LINKS covering oxidation.

Polaris 10 packs are a good price but their turnaround time can be slow. I am in no rush so it does not bother me, but some people might get impatient.

I do mine through Deere (OILSCAN), the kit is around ten dollars and some change and then shipping another couple of dollars.

That doesn't include TBN/TAN, but is available for an additional cost.

Turnaround is generally seven days or less.
