Not to give you a hard time but how can you feel any extra power from an air filter? The one you had in there before must have been clogged up pretty bad to notice a difference like you mention. What you heard was more noise and attributed that to more power. I ran one in my 1996 truck for many miles and never noticed any difference what-so-ever. When I would clean it, I ran the OEM filter (still new) and could not feel any difference except for the more noise when flooring it to pass. I would run the OEM filter for a week or so to let the K&N dry etc, no mileage difference to even measure.
There was a story in Pontiac High Performance may years back where they took a Trans Am to the strip and made some runs to check out some mod's. One run with the K&N filter, one with no filter and one with stock filter. Best times were with the stock filter, 2nd was no filter and K&N came in last. Times and ET was in the 0.01 sec's difference.
Each and every vehicle will react differently and I fail to see how a single change of clean air filters can be a noticeable improvement in power. All the tests they perform to prove prower increases are at a WOT and who drives around every day a WOT. Normal diving will not show any noticeable power increase, its all perceived IMO.
