What would the recommedation be to use in a multi use oil can. I have the following partial qts available and am open to other suggestions.

Pennzoil HD30
Mobil 1 75w-90
Amsoil MCV 20w-50 that I used to soak a new clutch.

I keep ATF in my oiler at work. My oiler holds a full quart and has a spout at least 2 foot long. I think its an old railroad oiler. A lot of the stuff I oil up is subject to cold Pa. winters.

For my riding mower and stuff that needs an oil to adhear I use a 7590 gear oil which is approximately a 30 weight but, a 7590 GL5 has some additives for sliding friction ie hypoid gears.

I've been using 75W90 as a general purpose oil, a Mobil 1, and it works very well. If you're paranoid about the ad pac use a GL4 synthetic like the expensive Mopar 80W90 (?), or the similar Castrol Syntorq (?).

what about LC mixed with ATF?

This mixture is recommended by Molakule in his Research Paper at the LubeControl Website for use as a penetrating oil:

quote:

4.1 Penetrating oil. I mixed by volume, 70% LC20 and 30% synthetic Dexron III ATF to produce an optically pleasant and very effective penetrating oil. I applied this mixture to muffler and tail pipe clamps. Rust and corrosion products immediately dripped with the solution and once the nuts were removed, the threads of the bolts were like new. The remaining oil tenaciously clung to the assembly to protect it from rust.

LC-20 and ATF per MolaKule; for several years and too many bolts. Have likely gone through [4] refills of the small oil can, and can't say I overdo the use of it (per fastener). I keep the expensive stuff (KROIL) for what will best benefit by it.

Bought "new" house today [1925 construction; same owner since early 1950's -- can you say "fuse box" and mean it ?]; the ingredients and oil can will accompany me.

When I change the oil in the car, I just upend the bottles over the oil can and let the last few spoonfulls drain into it. I never run out.

I have a bottle of Citgo/Mystik SAE 30 which is used for filling the pump oil can as a general purpose lubricant.

It's a non-detergent API SB service grade and has AW additives and non-foaming agents.

Many of the additives in a GF-4/SM oil are of little use in a general purpose application, where a surface film is sufficient. VI improvers, PP depressants, dispersants, etc. provide no benefits.

One half Schaeffers 10w-30 7000,and one half Marvel Mystry oil ,you will be suprised at the results on what ever you put it on ,work good on rusty frozen parts also,,,,BL

Depends on the application.
I use Liquid Wrench on this office chair to quiet its moaning and groaning - which bothers the wife, not me.
Used engine oil would not work well here as one can imagine.
We used to save the final drops on oil from the cans; most people just pitch, IMO, this is wasteful.

Some d a m n e d good info here....

What in the world is " LC" ??

I read a claim a few years ago that the various additives in motor oil (NOT present in non-detergent API SA oils) can react in "universal" AC/DC and series-wound DC brush-type electrical motors and AC or DC generators in the presence of the normal arcing to prematurely carbon up the contact areas on the armature. By extension, with no brushes, it doesn't seem like there'd be a problem with AC induction motors.
