Best oil for long term storage Syn / conventional

I am looking for the best oil to use in a vehicle that only gets 1000KM use per year. I have heard synthetic oil is hydroscopic much like brake fluid and has caused rusting when used for long term storage. Not sure if this is true, but I'm leaning towards Rotella 15W40 conventional for my 91 BMW.

I will be doing 3 year OCI's

+1 I recall it being advertised as a good choice for storage for precisely that reason.

Don't overthink it. It won't matter either way. I have pulled apart all sorts of engines that ran both and they all had oil on them.

I have 9 personal driver's and toys. My Willys, buggy, and Bronco have conventional and get changed every few years. I just changed the syn in my trail Jeep (Quaker State Synthetic) after 2.5 years.

Where did you hear synthetic oil was hydroscopic? If I were you I would use Mobil 1 0w40. Make sure you give it a good highway run to heat things up before parking it for storage.

I'm with Greg on this one - Mobil 1 0W-40. Skip the highway run unless you need to go somewhere, otherwise it's a waste of gasoline. At 600 miles a year, I'd only change it every 4 or 5 years - it would probably be safe past that. I assume it's stored in a garage out of the elements.

Yes, its stored in a dry garage. I leaning towards the Rotella 15W40 conventional. Just waiting for it to go on sale...

I see that all your cars are older than 10 years so this....

...every car especially as it gets 10+ years old, should be hoisted once a year to be inspected for any degradation of parts (anything rubber in particular) due to age.

Penny wise is the best advice....stretching an OC in this case is especially pound foolish...

Why would I pay a dealer $60 fo ran oil change?

BTW, my cars are all old, but are rust free, and in perfect mechanical condition.

Why would I pay a dealer $60 fo ran oil change?

BTW, my cars are all old, but are rust free, and in perfect mechanical condition.

$60 at a dealer might be a good price if the oil filter is extra expensive, or the oil at the dealer is special.

However, I doubt the dealer oil has anything special, and the cost of the extra expensive filter isn't bad when using the "Buy 5qt get a filter" sale.
