My dad's 95 Sable 3.8L rolled into town. I want to sample it as it has about 25K on a reman engine, 78K miles total, to verify there's no coolant in the oil.

Is there a "best of breed" oil for this engine? For example, Jeep's like a 40wt oil...GM's V8's like thick 30wts, such as GC. Is there a preference in this application like these others?

Thanks...
Mike

Is your Sable really 3.8l? x-wifes was 3.0.

Don't do what I did to my 3.8 Mustang. Oreillys 20w-50 with Champion plugs for 140k until I traded it. It was a little slow but consumption was zero.

You should try Xw-30 and Autolite plugs.

Yes, a 3.8L. It's one of the leaky intake models. Then, less than a month after the upper end gasket kit was replaced, it threw 2 rods. I think it happened within a couple days of the gasket repair. Engine was obviously worn due to coolant in the oil.

I'm trying to help him make it last a couple years more to get his money out of it. He allowed me to shock treat it with FP and use an initial does of LC.

I have no oil analyses to prove my statements, but the car seems happier with 5w30 Mobil 1 over 15w40 Mobil Delvac 1300 Super. I had little vibrations and such with the Delvac that disappeared with the Mobil 1. These engines run at very high oil pressures, so it is logical that the thin oils would work in this engine. I'd say stick with the thin to moderate thickness xw-30 viscosities.
