I have looked through the forums and cannot find what I'm looking for. If the answer is out there I'm sorry I missed it. I just purchased a 2018 Mazda 3 with the 2.5liter skyactive engine. The dealer gave me 6 free oil changes. They said that the Mazda oil was specifically made for skyactive engines. They said after the 6 free changes I could go elsewhere and get oil changes but for the best performance and longevity I should stick with the Mazda oil Is this the case? Or are they just trying to generate extra business? Thanks.

Mazda labeled oil is very good. Has a nice dose of molybendum in it which is an expensive additive. Keep using that for a long time. smile Many companies don't use moly because of it's price.

They said it has to with the additives and how it is formulated.

Ahhhh So there is some truth to what they said.

M1 since day one 105k on my skyactive never a drop used and spotless inside. Dealer blowing smoke up your a$$.

I would be cautious if they said they were using the Mazda Moly oil made by Idemitsu for your “free” oil changes. That oil is very good but also expensive at around $8+ a quart. Most dealers use Castrol or a generic brand. Confirm this before taking their word. In general, you can use any 0w-20 oil from any major brand and be confident. I would stick with the Mazda OEM filters though. Mazdaparts.org is a great source if you want to change the oil yourself using the Mazda oil. Congrats on your new Mazda. Excellent choice.

You'd be surprised by all the things that can go wrong during a dealership oil change service. You might as well buy a new oil pan now and keep it on hand.

Although i personally change my own oil cause I don’t trust someone I don’t know to do, millions of people do and have no issues. Saying “don’t drive out of town” is just stupid

Where did I say that ? You're putting words in my mouth.

Check oil level before leaving, watch them do the work if you want, etc. Dealerships, Ford Quicklane, Valvoline quick oil change place, Walmart TLE all seem to do fine for me when I've used them. Wouldn't take a car to Jiffy Lube who has now changed their name to something else around here, Take 5 or something like that. Avoid those.

They're trying to generate business. Mazda we/ Moly is a great oil, but I don't they're using that for the free changes. They're probably using Castrol Bulk 0w20. If they're free and they do a good job, sure, use them. Otherwise, any 0w20 on the market will work for you. Go through my history of you want to see a couple UOAs and filter dissections.

Good thing for the "edit" feature. Maybe the mods can shorten your window to 20 seconds. The OP can always get an oil sampling kit from NAPA to check out what they're using or ask to go back in the shop to see what the drums of oil say on the top of them.

Ok... So either stick with the Mazda branded oil or use M1 or penzoil or Quaker state and add a Moly additive.

or TGMO oil would be another good choice. smile The important thing is checking fluid levels often. Quickest way to an oil burner is not checking the level between oil changes. Also not going too long between changes. smile

Most brands have moly already added. It is a common additive.
