BEST oil for 1994 Jeep XJ Cherokee

Changed my oil today to Pennz Ultra 5W-30. It's running with less engine noise at a "cold" startup. The wicked valve noise is much more subdued now.

You plan on doing a UOA? Donald has done a couple on Ultra in his Jeep but the results have been disappointing. We don't know if it's the Ultra or his engine though, he's going to try something else. Would be interesting to see how your run of Ultra plays out.

I got my Blackstone Labs results in! Let me post... OIL INTERVAL: 3,000 miles OIL USED: Mobil 1 5W-20 grade COMMENTS: ROBERT: Copper and lead are highlighted on this report because they read about twice the universal average level. The universal averages show typical wear for this type of Jeep engine after about 4,200 miles on the oil. Your run was a little less than that, so copper and lead indicate some extra wear at bronze parts,such as bushings. It's not an astronomical amount here, but it'll be something to watch in the future. This oil is contamination free, with no fuel or water found. Plus, low insolubles and silicon mean that your oil and air filters are working great. Try 5,000 miles next. This is the oil fill that I added a quart of the Lucas Engine Stop-Leak to, which is mostly just their heavy-duty oil stabilizer with some seal conditioner.

Use a 40 grade or heavy 30 like German castrol like everyone else here with a jeep uses. A 5w-20 is too thin for that low rev high torque engine. I'd bet a 40 grade cuts those wear metals in half. I don't get it. You post in every single jeep thread. You as questions to guys like KCJeep,who is pretty experienced in this particular area yet you ignore all the posts that state point blank that thicker is better in this engine. You crack me up. Ask questions,ignore answers,then when your data comes in it shows they actually knew what they were talking about. A 10w-30 hdeo would be awesome,and cheap. If you want to spend some money go lad up on German castrol. Its just that simple,and it was said so many times that even I know what a jeep needs and I've never so much as sat in one. Hilarious

This is an old thread, I know, but I just put in some 10W30 Pure Plus in. Let's see how the old 4.0 likes it.

Clevy: that OCI was already filled with the 5W-20 before I'd posted here, anyway. I've been running 5w-30 and 5W-40 in both my jeeps since this thread was originally started. To be honest, I dislike running the HDEOs in the 40-grade range. They take too long to warm up, and since my '97 Cherokee has been used for commuting, I'm either wasting fuel warming up or harming the engine.

I've got Pennzoil Platinum Pure Plus 5w30 and a Fram Ultra filter in my grandpa's 96' Cherokee 4.0L now and it runs great.

I swapped out Rotella T5 and just threw in some 10w30 Defy and it is noticeably quieter and smoother. $15 for a jug at WM, we'll see how the UOA comes back next year and see but so far so good.

Defy is a very quiet running oil, tho only thing I've tried that is quieter is PYB by a slim margin. Defy also puts up some great UOA's in the Jeep engine as well. If I couldn't have PYB for my Jeep, I'd be using Defy.

I put Defy 10w-30 in the 93 Grand Cherokee I just got. I like Defy, but I think it was a mistake to use 10w-30. At -8f it turned over really slow and was hard to start. I don't think it will start at -15f or colder. I think I will use 5w-30 after this. I would consider running 10w-30 in the summer and 5w-30 in winter, but since it is a 3rd vehicle, I don't expect it to go more than 2-3000 miles in a year.

Defy is excellent but yes the 5w30 would be the way to go at 8 below.
