I'm going to be picking up a 2004 ford ranger here in the next couple days. Wondering what oil you guys would recommend to run? I would like to do 5000 mile oci's at least. So full synthetic would be best but which is best for the fords?

At only 5K mile OCI, this engine would do fine even on good quality mineral oil such as Pennzoil Conventional 5w30.

Is it consuming any oil? If it is, might want to look into some High Mileage oil instead.

Which engine? The 2.3 and 3.0 aren't picky at all and any conventional 5w-20 will do the trick. You can go spend more and run a synthetic but it won't be any benefit.

The 4.0 can be a bit picky because it has 4 timing chains running around in there.

Can't answer this question without knowing which engine it has. 2.3 and 3.0 specify 5w20. 4.0 SOHC specifies 5w30 and should absolutely not use 5w20.

Are they not the same block however?

3 different engines - not related

2.3 is a Mazda L series.
3.0 is the Ford Vulcan engine
4.0 is a Ford cologne V6 , modernized with overhead camshafts

+1 any conventional oil would easily work for 5k. Personally I would use Pennzoil Conventional or even Motorcraft.

I recommend Valvoline MaxLife Syn Blend 5w30 or Pennzoil High Mileage 5w30 coupled with a Motorcraft filter for a 5,000 mile OCI.

Valvoline MaxLife Full Synthetic 5w30 or Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30 are also options if you wish to extend the oil change interval to 7.5K-10K. You can run the Motorcraft filters that long also but FRAM Tough Guards & FRAM Ultras are good choices also.

I agree with car 51 if you can get a decent deal on the Motorcraft oil. 5w20 or even 5w30 in the summer would be great.

I use 5w30 in an 01 escape 3.0 and it runs great.
