Best oil filter alternative to Purolator for $5?

If $10 is the limit then Fram Ultra. For $5 around Napa filters, Wix, Fram TG (some are under 5) OEM are a few good choices.

Really? Do you have confidence in that filter?

The synthetic yes - but they are hard to get unless your mail order or have a pep boys or AAP that happens to carry them in stock near, they also cost more than an ultra ...

I wouldn't run a pure one...

I think the Fram filtration is just as good, it too is designed for synthetic oils, it's available at any WalMart, and it's cheaper...so why use the Purolator?

Do you just prefer that brand?

Well, in the case of the one I'm running now - in the interest of cutting it open.

I don't prefer Purolator (I've posted several times if I could get XG's without that infernal black goop they would be all I bought for automotive use at this point).

But I trust a Synthetic or D+ not to tear like a non-wire backed Purolator.

I've got an Ultra on the way to 20,000 though so even at regular price that is ~$5.00 per 10,000 OCI.

O.K., I'm confused.

I *think* the Ultra is a different filter than the XG, aren't they? I hope so, because I don't want their special "goop" excrement either. If I find out that the Ultra has this goop...I won't buy an Ultra!

I have a hard time believing you cant find Pureones anywhere. Worst case scenario you order them from Pep Boys or Advance Auto and have them delivered to your front door.

But if this isnt an attractive option...

And your vehicle isn't picky...

And you frequently change your oil...

Any other name brand filter should do fine. I would go with wix. I dont trust "off brand" oil filters. I wont use service champ, drive works, etc.

Five bucks gives you a wide range of quality choices.
I've had gasket seeps with P1s as well as Purolator white cans and P1s have shown the same media tearing problems as white cans, so I'd avoid them ATM.
For five dollars, take your pick of OEM, Motorcraft, Fram TG, Hastings, Wix or whatever else might strike your fancy.
You can come within a couple of quarters of five bucks with an Ultra bought on sale less the $2.00 MIR. Your extended family could probably use some Ultras less the rebate too, hint.
Some of the store brand oil filters also look pretty good and are quite cheap.
Check for disections of them in the oil filter forum, where you probably should have posted this.
Lots of choices out there.

The goop I'm talking about is the grip stuff - do not like.

XG is the part number prefix for an ULTRA but not all XG's are ULTRA.

Not a fan of the high mileage goop either.

I was at Walmart yesterday and looked at the extra guard 9688 and the TG9688. Everything but the anti-drain back valve looked the same. The tube and media, looking in the hole. I shined a light in there and really couldn't tell much difference. Is the silicone anti-drain back the only difference? It looks good for about $6.

For me, the MC filter is a good filter for just under $4. If your vehicle cant use one, the Napa Silver and Fram Extra Guard are both good alternatives. (Dont be a donkey and run either in a neglected engine for 5k plus though.)

The Fram TG is just under $6 at WM and is also worth considering.

Locally, WIX/ NG filters are getting up towards $7-$8.50. Its getting hard to recommend them unless they are on sale.

I assume the TG would have a larger amount of a more efficient synthetic blend media. Buy both, cut them open and post them up!

I only have experience with the XG9688. My moms Elantra seems to like them and I run them 2x.

TG has silicone ADBV as noted, and it has more glass (synthetic) fibers blended into the cellulose media than the lower ExtraGuard. TG has better media, although the ExtraGuard still has at least some glass fibers blended in, just not as high a percentage. (Most oil filters have exactly NO glass fibers in their media.)

Yes. To add to the nitty gritty details, the TG will also have a slightly better paint job able to withstand corrosives that it may be exposed to on a longer 10k OCI. (That said, the ultra has the sturdiest paint job of the main 3.)
