Best Oil 2005 Ford Taurus

Hi all:

I have been lurking around these forums for a while now and finally decided to join and post a question. I read the sticky requesting that new posters give as much info as possible regarding the vehicle type, so I will try. I have a 2005 Ford Taurus with the 3.0L Vulcan Engine. I have been running MC 5w20 "synthetic blend" oil and MC FL 400S filter, changed every 3,000 miles or sooner. The car has reached 105,000mi and I am trying to get as much life out of it as possible. Should I be doing anything differently? Are there different (read: better) oils I should be using to maximize fuel economy? I am located in Southern NJ and our winters can be interesting. Last year we saw over 2' of snow in one storm.

MC oil works very well.No need to change now. Replace the thermostat and flush cooling system.Consider a 180 degree stat..
I now use a 180 in my Ford and it runs better than the 192 stat. it had originally.

You're changing it too much. Save money and go to 5k and you may "only" reach 300k or more on that engine.

Keep up the good maintenance and WELCOME!! MC is a well regarded oil around these parts

And you could stretch the OCI's a little farther. If you really care do your regular 3K change this winter and do an Oil analysis, see if you have any probs or how much farther you can stretch out OCI's.

Thanks for the welcomes. I had heard MC is a decent oil, but wanted to make sure I was doing right.

Note to add: I drive over 50 miles one way to work each day, so the car averages 500 miles per week, IF I don't go anywhere on the weekends. I'd like to continue changing it every 3,000mi, as that's what the manual calls for.

Also, the coolant system was flushed ~3 weeks ago.

motorcraft 5w20 is the way to go but u are changing it to often change it every 5000 or 4000 and 5 months whichever comes first if you feel better

I have a 98 Taurus vulcan. I have been changing 1 year intervals on Amsoil, for about the last 8 years.

Heck, I would run yours out to at least 5-6K.

A full synthetic will probably increase your fuel mileage by 1-2% as the synthetic will flow better in the cold temps you see; less friction among the internal parts when cold. I would recommend either Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 or Pennzoil Platinum 5w30. I am running Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 and my car is nice and smooth during cold starts (of course a cold morning here in Texas is a summer day for you .

I would say keep using the same products just bump your interval up to 4-5000 miles , if you check your manual I believe it should say 5000 miles for normal service and 3000 for severe , with 100 mile a day commute you should not fall under short trip or severe service

Keep using the Motorcraft in 5w20 flavor. Change it every 5,000 miles and you will still have miles left on the oil. Your concern in that car should not be the motor failing but the transmission failing. Have you done regular transmission services every 25k-30k miles?

My sons 3.0 Vulcan has 348K all om Mobil 1 oils at 10-14K OCIs. Engine still runs great.

Motorcraft is an excellent oil, in fact it's cheapest synthetic blend you can buy at walmart. I used it in my 87 honda accord before I sold it, never leaked or burned a drop.

And why should OP not use 180 degree Stat if it runs better than 192?

Had a 2000 Taurus. Loved that car. Care for them and they will care for you. Only ones people "Hate" them are they dont take care of them, and then they break.

You can maybe run that car forever if you do every single maintenance always.

I definitely agree with HangerHarley on those statements.

Stay on top of the coolant flushes. Vulcan Tauruses are well known for plugging the heater core with rust. Transmission fluid as well, as has already been said. Oil is probably the last thing you should be concerned with.
