I may try your experiment as well. How much is this MPRO stuff?

$86 gallon - WOW.

$10 for 4 oz. - WHOA

Hoppes works REALLY well.

My first reaction when I priced Amsoil some years ago

Good one!

For cleaning I use a modified version of Ed's Red with John Deere Low-Vis Hy-Gard ATF replacing standard ATF, MEK instead of acetone for slower evaporation, some LC-20, toluene and an ounce or two of Lucas Syn Oil Stabilizer per quart (I still have a BUNCH from pre-BITOG), along with the kerosene and mineral spirits.

For lubrication I usually use CLP or Mobil 1 synthetic grease depending on what is required (I've had the Mobil 1 for years now). I'm getting a hankering to devise my own CLP-esque concoction which would likely be more LP-ish, I'll need to test its anti-corrosion abilities of course...

I recently bought a new rifle. I took a old jelly jar and put in the following. 30 weight oil, marvel mystery oil, morey's oil stabalizer and a little deep creep. It works pretty well. As I use the rifle, I plan to add a larger percentage of deep creep to make sure there is no carbon build up.

Might add, I like my new rifle. It makes a loud boom.

I though i'd reopen this old thread. What are most of you using for AR- vs Pistol lube? I generally use rem oil spray on the AR as its easy to spray and wet everything down, and AR's seem to like to run wet. I've used rem oil and superlube oil on triggers and superlube grease on pistol slide rails.

How many of you use automotive oil? If so what weight?

I've been using G96 and AMSOIL on my AR and AR-style 308. The LR-308 in particular will let you know if it doesn't like an oil after about 50 rounds, it will short cycle. But both the G96 and the AMSOIL have kept it very happy over hundreds of rounds.

For pistols, I use TW-25B grease on the slides.

For Garands, I use Mobil 1 grease.

For everything, ARs, pistols and the Garands, where a drop of oil is required, I use some Safariland LP that I put in a dropper bottle years ago...at the rate I'm using it, that two ounces will last several more years. A drop is just that: a drop. Doesn't take much. And in those applications, where just a drop is needed on some small part, the brand is irrelevant.

I still use Mobil 1 20W-50 for a gun lube. And Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease. But since I bought Weapon Shield Oil and Lithium Grease, I've been using those as well. But to be honest, I use whatever I grab when it's time to clean. It never really seems to matter.

I think 0w-20 is too thin and runny for guns. It will work in a pinch but I like HDEO 15w-40 or 20w-50 for lubricating firearms. Those oils are much thicker and stay in place better on firearms.

As for grease, I think NGLI# 2 automotive greases are too thick, sticky and stinky for most firearms. Super lube grease is just about the perfect consistency for lubing firearms. It also has no odor and is available pretty cheap at Harbor Freight.

It depends on the area of the country where you live, along with the climate you're shooting in. 0W-20 will work great on guns in Fargo, North Dakota in January. But not in Phoenix, Arizona in June. There you are much better served with 20W-50. That's the beauty of using motor oil. You can custom tailor the weight and viscosity to what you need, based on when and where you are shooting.

I've been using motor oils and greases of various brands and types for the last 50 years on my guns. Occasionally taking a break to try out a new "gun oil" here and there. But I always manage to go back to them. Motor oils are cost effective, and work well for their intended purpose of keeping what needs lubrication, lubricated.

I've never had a gun not run, or stop running due to a lubrication issue. And I've never had to deal with any rust. So that's enough to convince me. I'm really not interested if they score .00000002 one way or the other on the Dual Flame Gas Chromatic Microgramma Electron Analyzing Machine.

Remoil is a good cleaner. I use it to blast my guns clean. It is a terrible lube. And I mean terrible. Probably the worst lube on the market. Anything lubed with aerosol Remoil would be completely lubricant free after 30 days. The stuff is half solvent, so it dries up quick.

The AR runs really hot. As such, they like a thick viscosity lube that stays put. Yes, Remoil will work. Until it burns off, at about 200 rounds. It you keep applying it every 200 rounds, I suppose it would work. But any lube would work if reapplied every 200 rounds.

Use the aerosol Remoil as a cleaner. Lube with some real lube.

Ive tested these and found them to be good for the AR15. Any of these should get you 500-1000 rounds before the action gets gummy and needs re-lubricated.

- G96 Synthetic CLP
- Breakfree LP (not CLP)
- M Pro 7
- Weaponshield
- Shooters Choice FP-10
- Slip 2000 EWL
- Slip 2000 EWL 30
- ALG 0000 Very thin grease
- TW25B grease

I have not discovered viscosity to really matter when it comes to a lubricant on the AR platform. Quality and quantity > viscosity.

I would agree an “optimal” weight would depend on many factors. Firearm type / usage / ambient temp etc.. I picked 0w-20 as a universal grade that can work in most environments & its usually full synthetic. My experience with the heavier grades isn’t as positive. I’ve noticed (especially with 40wt & up) it gets kind of gummy & attracts more dirt. My preference for 0W-20 is based on a fairly clean weapon shooting 300 rounds or less around 50-85 degrees. YMMV

I have some valvoline syn 10w30, thinking about using that with say 25% schaeffers 132 i have in the garage. I bought a couple of these bottles.
