Steve Vai is a gymnast. Speed for the sake of speed.
Same for others of his ilk.
Where's the actual music? Isn't that the real point?

Alex Lifeson from RUSH. Saw them in concert twice last year. Also, just saw Robin Trower last month. He aint fast, but sure is soulful.

Dave Gilmour has more feeling in 2-3 notes he plays in a solo than 2-3 albums combined from acrobats/speed demons/show-off guitarists like Vai, IMO.

Well that's it. Ragnarok is on the way: I actually agree with mechtech2.

This guy pretty much out shreds them all

I like John Petrucci's style

This is a great performance (Dave Larue is no slouch in this one either)

This one's a little slower and soulful.

I was at a private party where he was playing in the same trio as the Glasgow kiss video. He's very professional and a great showman. A couple of the other musicians at the party were not on their best behavior...

I have a G3 Live in Tokyo DVD with Petrucci in it, he is indeed a very professional guitarist.

Another vote for Alex Lifeson with Rush. All his solo's match the spirit of the song and not all songs have solo's. He only puts it in when needed or "felt."

That's not true at all about Steve Vai, sure he is a fast player but if you listen to his albums there is more to it than just speed. There is definitely "music" in his performances. The guy is a musical genius, IMO, and the sounds he can get a guitar to make are simply incredible.

Anybody can make interesting sounds with the right equipment. The true test of a great guitarist is the same as the test for a good song: sounding great in someone's kitchen at midnight playing nothing but an acoustic.
