Hello guys,
I am from Bulgaria.Because i'm no oil expert and the more i read about the subject the more confused i get can i please ask you abot help.
I drive a Audi 2003 1.8T 163 ps.The oil i have used so far is Castrol Magnatec Professional 5W40.
The last change i tried Mobil 1 New Life 0W40.
My question is are these good oils for my car or do i have to change the brand?
I want the best oil for my car.

Thanks

But the owner manual says that the oil need to be ACEA A3, and the Castrol is C3.The Castrol only caries the VW 502.00 spec

You can use either A3/B4 or C3--> if fuel in your country is sulphur free!

Just pay attention that you do OCI at around 10-15kkms since that engine is sludge monster (small oil sump)

In addition you can install even a biger oil filter... That will add some extra oil to fight sludge!

A good friend of mine took his GTI 1.8T sludge monster to over 180k miles on Mobil 1 0w-40. I'd say that is pretty good.

.On so many forums they say different stuff about grades, oil brands, hydrocracking that it gets confusing.

Yes all that can get confusing. But the thing is you would like to have a high detergency oil to fight any sludge production. You would also like to have a a wide viscosity range because it gets cold there in winter, and can be hot in summer. So your choice of 5W-40 is very good.

Adding oil to the total sump capacity is good and adding media area to the filter is also good. So going to an oversized filter is a smart move. Mann would be a good brand. you'll have to have a local auto parts store or service shop look up which larger filter will fit.

Either Castrol or Mobil1 will be fine oils. The 5W-40 spread almost guarantees that they are well made synthetics, or stout semi-synthetic blends and that's very good.

I'll assume that you have access to Ravenol and Motul too ... They make some excellent oils also. And you could look at Liqui-Moly to see if there is something there that meets your needs.

Keep the change intervals reasonable. Keep an eye on the dip stick to make sure you are not running low. You will be fine and the car will run a long and happy life

For oil filter i use the OE 068 115 561 F on my car.
Thanks so much guys for the help i'm very grateful.

Had a 2001 VW Jetta 1.8T, but I think the same holds true for your A4. Used oversized Mann w950/4 (I think was the model). It's huge, a bit tight, but it'll fit. Adds a bit more oil capacity. Was not picky about oil except that it was synthetic (so it didn't coke up the turbo) and carried A3/B4 rating basically to ensure HTHS of 3.5. Used heavy 0w-30, 0w-40, and 5w-40 in there. Ran for 5,000 to 6,000 miles between changes due to living off of dusty dirt road. Never had any problems with engine. Always let it idle for a bit to cool oil down before shutting it off. Had about 210k miles when parked due to other issues.

IF you want to tweak your car....you can also change 5th gear with 5th gear from 1.9 TDI of that era

It is well known tweak (google it)......you then also have to flash ECU to compensate injection times for longer gearing...but at least highway driving will be more pleasant that way

According to my colleague on one slovenian forum he maintained the same fuel consumption @160km/h as previously with OEM shorther 5th gear @143km/h

M1 0w40 is an excellent choice. You will find many BITOG members who have been using it in their VW or Audi for many years. Also, it works well in a variety of other engines.

My car is equipped with 6 speed manual gearbox i forgot to mention it and it's all wheel drive.
Is the Mann w950/4 used to prevent the sludge problem and will it keep the oil temperature down ?

According filters...

OEM is w940/66: https://catalog.mann-filter.com/EU/eng/catalog/MANN-FILTER%20Katalog%20Europa/Oil%20Filter/W%20940~66

tsteps suggestion w950/4: https://catalog.mann-filter.com/EU/eng/catalog/MANN-FILTER%20Katalog%20Europa/Oil%20Filter/W%20950~4

B is 63 vs 62mm

C is 72 vs 71mm

Thread is the same...UGV and RSV are the same

I think that biger filter should fit

The oil filter will not prevent sludge or change oil temperature. I would just stick to whatever the OEM filter is (My only experience with VAG products have been cartridge filters not spin on). The recommendations of Catrol and Mobil 0w40 will keep your engine happy. Maintain the oil level and change it at the factory intervals.

Yeah but......when I was here on BITOG for the first time I was like.....why are these americans constantly using boutique engine oils ( 0w40...0w30)...but with time I have realised that over the pond 0W grade is way more common that 5W.

Here is opposite...you can get 5w40 anywhere.....0w40 is not so common grade here!!!
