Best cartridge filter for 3.6 Dodge pentstar?

Has anyone noticed if the oil filter cap opens and closes easier warm or cold? When I changed it yesterday warm I noticed it turned then stuck then turned several times before I could turn free by hand. When I put it back to together cold it seemed to turn easier until it bottomed out. I did have a light silicone lube on the threads and O ring on assembly. Just wondering if anyone else with this pentestar oil filter has had similar result? ANd warm or cold better for this, I know warm to drain oil.

I checked last week and my Walmart did not have it. I did "talk" with one of the workers and he did say there is a new oil filter reset coming soon and it should be part of it. It will be interesting to see how the build quality is...I would definitely try one.

The Fram Ultra 11665 are in my local Wal-Mart. They're $10.97

I bought two for my wife's Grand Cherokee.

Where are the pics!? I am headed to WM tomorrow after work to check out mine again.

On doing oil filter research for the wife's new Grand Cherokee, I ran across this on the National Oil & Lube News (fast lube and quick maintenance industry’s oldest and largest trade publication [their description]) web site. Even considering the source, it may be worth remembering as a precaution.

Chrysler’s 3.6L Pentastar Engine

A high failure rate of broken bypass valves continues to be reported on the Chrysler 3.6L Pentastar engine. Vehicles have been serviced and customers allowed to leave with broken bypass valves and missing springs. Lube service technicians have seen the loose components and heard the springs when they dislodged during a filter change but failed to identify the damaged components as a part of the bypass valve. The bypass valve on the 3.6L Pentastar engine may be positioned in one of two locations:

1. 2011–2013 vehicles will incorporate a bypass valve mounted in the oil filter housing. If the valve is damaged, the complete oil filter housing must be replaced.

2. 2014–2016 vehicles will contain a bypass valve mounted in the oil filter cap. When removing the oil filter from the cap, pull the filter straight from the cap. Do not rock the filter back and forth to release it from the cap, as damage to the bypass valve can occur, requiring a cap replacement.

It is imperative the vehicle does not leave the service facility with a damaged or non-functional bypass valve, as engine damage can result.

Extended Service Intervals

Vehicle manufacturers are promoting extended service intervals, as it helps sell vehicles. With today’s powertrain technology, synthetic lubricants can last 12,000-15,000 miles. Conventional oil filters are not designed to provide protection for that length of service. Vehicles driven for those service intervals should be equipped with an extended life oil filter. Operating a vehicle under an extended service interval with a conventional oil filter is playing Russian roulette with the engine. A lot of attention is given to the lubricant with little consideration as to how long the filter will last without bypassing.

Very familiar with the issues on both models.

Luckily, I have not experienced a failure on either of our vans.

I prefer the Hengst setup GM used on the 2.2/2.4 Ecotecs, I feel like the Pentastar's cartridge setup is a bit more fragile and not as forgiving to abuse by quickie lube techs.

Bought the Fram Ultra XG11665 for mine and the Mopar MO-744 for the wife's van today at WM.

I am impressed with the built quality on the XG. All of the pleats are even, the seams look good at the base and the top where the glue bonds the ends, and the cage looks just like the MO-349 cage.

I included a pic of the new TG models and the existing EG models for both versions of the Pentastar engine for price comparison.

looks like the plastic mesh used in Purolator Boss and some Mann cartridges. I know that Mann does have a Korean factory (they supply OE filters for Hyundai/Kia). Thank you for the pictures

Good call on Mann.

You're welcome for the pics!

I'm using the hastings filter for my 3.6 but the ultra (when i find it) might be my next choice..thanks for pics by the way

I would be happy to learn the Mann or Boss filter media has Ultra 99%@20 specs., if in fact this is that media. The box strangely shows standard Ultra construction. Maybe the Motorking can be called in for advice.

Any idea who makes the Wix for this application? iirc the 10010 I used in mine was made in Korea.

They have their own Korean factory, but it could really come from anybody! Pictures might help

They're making an XP, but it remains to be seen where it will come from. If Wix makes it themselves, it'll be Polish (all of the XP cartridges are made in Poland).

Pictures will be awhile, I just installed it last weekend.

Already know about the phone call. The point was the white Mann looking media, is in a Fram Ultra box, showing the USA usual Fram construction. So what is up with that. If it is Mann media and the box says 20 micron efficiency, that would be interesting. If they can make a different Ultra without the heavy wire mesh in Korea, also interesting. Doesn't seem like an unreasonable observation to see something totally different come out of a box than the box shows.

On the 11-13 bypass valve breaking you can now buy the Dorman quick fix for that without having to replace the whole unit for approx 20 bucks...

I get what you're saying ... but the BOSS already has media that looks like that (full synthetic with a nylon mess backing) but it's still only rated at 99% @ 40 microns. And if the BOSS uses media supplied by Mann then it's not very efficient, and doubt Fram would be buying inefficient media from Mann to make Ultra filters in Korea. Could be though that Fram has now developed a full synthetic with a nylon mess backing instead of steel wire.

If your cage breaks, then you are still SOL. The Dorman replacement only addresses the valve that rides within the cage (on the spring).
