Best brand for ignition coils?

I recently put new spark plugs in my car and between the very detailed maintenance records from the p/o in the glovebox and the fact that they almost crumbled into pieces as I took them out, the ignition coils are original to the car and are way past due for replacement.

Looking on Amazon there's the 'standard' Denso coils but for roughly the same price I can get a set of 4 from like 20 different chinese manufacturers.

Is there any company I should avoid or gravitate toward for buying ignition coils? I know they're a major component so I want this to be a buy-once-and-done thing.

Thanks!

I would use original equipment (OE) parts.

Denso is a good brand and could very well be the OE supplier.

I replaced the denso coils in my prius with ebay cheapies... one failed so badly the computer hated it and shut me down on the side of the road. Didn't want to run on three cylinders. That's annoying.

I guess if you cheap out, buy an extra for the glove box. A good idea anyway... and an OBDII Bluetooth dongle and tools.

The legitimate (?) Denso coils for my car are now $24 so I'm spending the extra bucks.

The OE ones are Denso as a matter of fact lol. The plastic on them is really brittle, the tube part on one cracked. The plastic on all of them is also turned brown toward the bottom too so I want to replace them.

Do it once, do it right. I tried a cheapo IAC on a beater Mitsubishi for a customer to save them money, bit me a few days later when same symptoms came back, and to do it again with the better part.

I bought a set of 8 for my Ford 4.6 from an Amazon seller with excellent feedback.

I haven't tried them yet....... Soon, though.

I'll definitely be keeping the old used stock ones under the rear seat if needed in an emergency.

If it is for the car on your signature, Honda Civic, get a Denso.

Don't go with Chinese parts, you will get 100 of them before getting 1 good one.
That is why they are cheap, no quality inspection so your car become the quality inspector.

NGK U5099.

OE only when it comes to ignition coils regardless of how expensive they are. (Don't have to buy at the dealer necessarily though)

Replace only when they are a problem. If you want to do anything replace the boots (where possible).
The coil itself rarely goes bad on most vehicles.

OE Honda or Denso/Hitachi. Diamond Electric doesn't seem to supply to the aftermarket and neither does Mitsubishi Electric. Don't bother with the Chinese stuff.

Chinese coils are hit and miss, but more miss than hit.
Most use aluminum instead of copper for the coil windings, so they just don't last, if even work from the get go.
There are a few out there that a good (ARAParts has some good ones I used on a F150 that are know to be picky about coils), but sticking with OEM/OEM maker is the safe and cheaper in the long run.

That being said, as mentioned above, coils are not a wear item, the boots and springs are. If you are not having a misfire, you probably can get by with just a boot and spring replacement.

To Linctex and others: My friend's 4.6 has its coils near the front end of each valve cover-right out in the open.
Each of the two coil packs has 4 spark plug wires coming from it.
There are no coils-over-plugs.

So many times I've heard of COPs on 4.6 engines. Is it a year thing?
His is a 1997. First year for the modular engines I think.

I've seen the first few years of the Modular V8s use 2 coil packs, one coil fires 4 cylinders, which are split between the two banks.

Ford switched sometime in the late 1990s to COP. The 4.6 was used in the 1992-on Crown Vic/Grand Monkey/Town Car.

Change the coils with OE, Motorcraft, NGK, Denso, Delpi. SMP Red Box (not the green or newer production) USA made would be the ones I look for if you can find them NOS may be on fleabay or an old school parts store with old stock. These are known for eating coils one after the other I would do them all.
No Chicom crap, as others have posted they are no deal.

Delphi coils have a good reputation. BMW / Mini changed suppliers from Bosch to Delphi, and the owner consensus is the Delphi is more reliable.
