How can that be when in some cases an ST is about the same and a buck cheaper?

is that the cross reference to 7317 and 14610?

Those are Honda filters (20x1.5mm). The FL820S is a 22x1.5mm thingie

then the FL820S wouldn't work in my car.. I use the P1 14610

Personally I don't like E-core garbage. The ST in ChinaMart here are around 3.50. And the FL-820S has a silicone ADBV for $3.67..

I'd stay with the PureONE.

Uhhhhh my ST 7317 is not E-core, I can think of 3 ST that's not E-core. I've been to many WM from east coast, mid-west and west coast and never seen it more than $2.84.

Some Champ filters are built much like a Purolator. Others use the new, improved design with a rubber to metal bypass in the thread end. Never saw any ST but the all brands over priced cartridges over $3. You can often pick up an AC or STP for the same price as a Purolator and maybe a Value Craft for less.

Best bang for the buck must mean either cheaper or better, not the same as.

Personally I like and usually use the Purolator Classic (about $3.50). For my application I think it's right.

Having a car isn't about washing it or working on it. It's about driving it. Which is why, for over 80 years, every filter engineered under the Purolator name has been designed with one goal in mind - delivering pure oil to your vehicle's engine. So continue to replace your oil filters with Purolator products and we'll continue to help keep your car protected and on the road for years to come.

Looking for a quality filter but watching your wallet?

A Purolator Classic oil filter provides maximum protection against harmful contaminants getting into your engine, and costs a little less than a Purolator PureONE oil filter. For low-mileage or highway driving, a Purolator Classic oil filter is the oil filter of choice.

Purolator Classic Oil Filters are 97.5% Efficient*

With an efficiency rating of 97.5%, just slightly lower than a Purolator PureONE oil filter, you can be assured that a Purolator Classic oil filter provides premium protection for every day driving.

In addition, the new Purolator Classic oil filter offers:

* Multi-fiber, high-density media which filters out harmful contaminants
* Internally lubricated Nitrile gasket that requires less torque for filter removal
* Anti-drainback valve** minimizes engine dry start

Why do so many people sweat a few dollars difference in the price of oil filters? The filter is cheap, but the engine isn't. You don't want to use a filter to its full potential, since the filter becomes blocked and the bypass is unfiltered.

I agree with Diesel Tech and Gary Allan. The best bang for the buck is the P1 or Bosch Premium. I was a fan of the M1 EP at twice the price, but river_rat's landmark study changed my mind.

I'm not sure but I think the Bosch Premium is the same as the Purolator Classic, but the P Classic is about $3 less ($3.50 vs $6.50 for the Bosch), so the P Classic is the better deal.

I realize it's only a few bucks but if I don't need anything better than a Purolator Classic then I see no reason to use a PureONE. The more I learn about Purolator oil filters, the more convinced I am that they make the best filter for my car.

I was talking to a rep from Thermagasket and he replaces his oil filter twice a year and his oil once a year. I may possibly do the same.

I only get the M1 filters when it's a deal, like the $10 AAP coupon or the M1 deal currently running. I've slowly been purchasing P1 and Bosch filters since then. I've noticed Bosch seems thicker than the P1, which is my only gripe about a P1.

The Bosch is closer to, if not exactly the same as the PureONE, not the classic. Unless they changed it with the recent addition of the Distance Plus filter.

+1 I'm satisfied based on efficiency rating and river_rats recent bench tests that the with the exception of the texture on the P1, they are the same. The new Bosch DP, looks to be heavier duty filter with thicker can and a greater holding capacity. It's also about twice the price of the Bosch Prem.

Seriously, I hope you're mixing a salad into your regiment once in awhile.
Ha. Nope. Never ate green vegetables, 'cept for a few sauted green peppers and celery in my chili or soup. This cholesterol fervor is all balogna - pushed by the the drug co'c. You body balances its cholesterol, beef fat is a good fat and you are genetically disposed to handle it. I am 10 lbs "overweight: and ,my ldl is acceptable. The killers are HFCS in soda pop and margarine (hydrogenated corn and soy oils) - the biggest killer of humans on this planet. The heart disease rate in the US at the turn of the century was WAY lower than today when people ate simple farm food - Pork, Beef, bacon and eggs real butter and whole unpasturised milk.

Sometimes I question the beef that is raised today vs. beef from back when traditional methods were the only methods.....

I have a cabinet full of Fram (cartridge), AC Delco and ST oil filters. I consider them all great value for the price.

Especially the Frams when I find them for my application for sale for ~$3 each (free shipping) on ebay and the like.

Original question: Best bang-4-your-buck filter?

Classic Purolator.

I don't see why I'd spend more for a potentially more restrictive filter ... even one with a silicone ADBV.

Extra buck buys sturdy, metal end caps and higher filtration performance.
