Best ATF to use in Power Steering system.

As far as I know, GM has always specified a dedicated PS fluid and not ATF in their PS systems. Despite the apparent interchangeability, I use PS fluid where recommended to assist in fluid identification.
The Pontiac Vibe (aka Toyota Matrix) used Dex III in the PS system.

It's a Toyota, I use ATF in that one.
Yes, but the Pontiac was serviced at the GM dealerships and warrantied by GM . That could be a reason why GM added tests for power steering systems. The Geo cars may be have been similar, since they were Toyota, Suzuki, etc.

The owner's manual for my Ford 1994 F150 calls for Ford Type F transmission fluid to be used in the power steering system. Type F is still readily available at some auto parts stores.
My 1996 Ford Contour specs Type F ATF fluid for the PS. I've been doing reservoir suction removals and adding new Type F ATF. so far after 26 years everything still functions ok. A hose and metal tube needed to be replaced do to leaking in our " brine salt-full" winters rotting everything on our vehicles.
